Knowing More about Our School Community

In connection with the Unit of Inquiry, Community Helpers, students of PP1 interviewed the school in-house community helpers like Doctor, Security Guards, Electrician, Gardener, Milkman, Librarian, and Housekeeping Staff. They introduced themselves and explained about their roles and responsibilities in school and how they help us in our daily activities in school. They also explained the students about the various tools used by them everyday.

Students asked many questions and learnt many new things. This session gave a great exposure to the children to learn about how the school community helps us in school.

Activity — Fun with Tessellations

Students of grade 8 explored tessellations, which are patterns of shapes that fit together perfectly, and created beautiful patterns. It was a fun activity which was like a puzzle for the students to fit different polygons to design their own tessellation without any gaps or overlaps.

Grade IX F Student Reflections on CAS Activity

Grade 9 students of Oakridge International School have done CAS community service at Government School Manikonda by teaching them English, Math and Art— they spent almost half day with the Government School students. Here are some student reflections:
An Oakridger – On the 25th of November, we the students of Class IX F visited the Manikonda Government School as a part of our CAS activity. We were divided into 5 groups, each with a team of three members, and each group taught one class.

We taught the children of the Government school, some of the activities like drawing, colouring, and helped them with the basics of English. We imparted some of our knowledge to the government school students who took in everything they were taught with a great deal of enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

We were shy at first, but the students had such a bombastic nature we were bound to open up sometime. They introduced themselves at first and started to open up to us too. Many students sang and danced eager to redeem themselves to their seniors taking autographs from us at the end as to get souvenirs of our time together. We really hope to visit soon and can’t wait to get to know them better.

Sindhura – CAS was really extraordinary. We interacted and socialized with the students of Manikonda government school. Teaching these kids was a great experience. Their faces were full of joy when we met them which warmed our hearts to the core. We really hope we get such opportunities to teach them again.

Shikha – CAS was an amazing experience. We really learnt about the hardships of the less privileged children. When we realized that the fourth graders of that school did not know the basics of English, I felt very privileged and gifted. We felt good helping them learn.

Muskaan – CAS was a good experience. We had a lot of fun teaching the students of Manikonda School. We all were really happy to see those students who are joyful and geared up! It was a great experience. I hope we get another opportunity to go there and help them.

Jayadeep – CAS was a great experience for all of us. I am really proud to be able to go and teach the less privileged children. I am glad to be part of Oakridge for conducting such exciting activities giving us opportunities to help those less fortunate.

Kashyap – I had fun teaching the children. The children were attentive and they listened to us. It was fun interacting with them and they had so much fun and learnt everything with great enthusiasm.

Sushanth – CAS was a good opportunity to teach the less privileged children. I am glad that Oakridge gave us such an opportunity. It was a great experience and we hope to go there again.

We thank Mr. Amit Kumar Sribhashyam and Mrs. Shilpa Mullapudi – Parents of Anika Sribhashyam for executing and arranging the field trip for us. Thank you for your support. We also would like to thank our parent who volunteered to accompany us to the field trip. It was quite a joyful experience.

How Truthful or Honest are You?

Yes, “how honest or truthful are you”? This was a question that children started asking themselves by the end of the Value education session or the School cinema as our kids like to call it. On 27th November we had yet another value education session with the grade 5 students where they got an opportunity to understand one of the important values. A value that will benefit us as it will always direct us to the right track. This was none other than the value of Honesty or Truthfulness.

As usual the kids saw the short film about cars where one of the characters comes clean and tells people the truth. Whether you are praised or loved but if it’s for the wrong reasons then whole idea of respect loses its meaning. The film taught them about the meaning and the importance of being honest and the fruits that we get for that.

Children seemed to enjoy the film and they came up with great answers when their host Ms Bhavani asked them the meaning and the essence of the movie. Some children also linked the truthfulness to the academic honesty they are learning in their PYP exhibition. Over all it was another fun and interactive session to learn a new value.
