Mrs. Upasana Mittal parent of Preetika Mittal of 7E is a professional Interior designer for past 10 years.She  shared her experiences with students. Very clearly she explained the basic skills required to become an interior designer. Children were oriented how to choose a career in this field. She also explained how the subjects like Math, Science, Technical drawing and Geography are connected with Interior designing. Children have equally participated in the session by clearing their queries. It was a pleasure knowing about this fascinating field of art and designing.

Mr Srinivas Pingali a Soft ware Professional , parent of Raghava VIIE, obliged us by coming to the School and interacting with students of Grade VII D & VIIE .

He has given a complete picture of various career options like service oriented and manufacturing fields.

Through a colourful PPT he showed the different fields where IT (Software ) is used such as Banking (ATM), Video games, Online reservations for air and railways, Hospitals, Robotics etc. He also explained the basic requirements to become an IT professional such as to complete 12^th and graduation with Math and Science Subjects. Any professionals like B. Tech or Science Graduates can become an IT professional. He also encouraged the youngsters to get trained in IT techniques through their natural inquisitiveness and research.

The interaction was a success as the students reacted positively. The interaction created a close and cordial bond between the parent and the students. It was a great opportunity for us as Mr Srinivas Pingali took the initiative to come and talk to the students about the topic which has a great importance in choosing a career. He created a conducive atmosphere which helped in free flow of thoughts.

All school children need an education that will help them develop relationships and prepare them for life in mainstream society.

Inclusion has the potential to reduce mistrust and build friendship, respect and understanding among children. Segregation of “special needs” students teaches children to be fearful, ignorant and breeds prejudice. Only integration and tolerance will minimise bullying, alienation and name calling among students.

Students with learning disabilities have a lot to offer their peers, families, their educators and themselves. We need to overcome our tendency to focus so much on their limitatations, that we fail to see hidden strengths. Often, the tenacity these children show in the face of continued and overwhelming academic challenges is their real triumph and make them winners in life.

The Counseling & Supportive Instruction unit of Oakridge International School, Newton Campus, Hyderabad organised a seminar  on ‘ Critical issues and current status of Inclusive Education’  on Tuesday, November 15^th 2011.

The seminar brought together school administrators, special educators and Psychologists from the twin cities and highlighted critical issues in mainstreaming children with Special learning needs. With the universalization  of elementary education recommended by the RTE act of 2009, there is a need to create awareness and equip teachers  with skills for effective instruction in inclusive classrooms.

Mr . Manishankar a noted film director was the chief guest . The guest speakers were Dr. Usha Naik ,former professor of child psychiatry at Niloufer Hospital, lMs. Farida Raj , well-known special educator and Dr. Shakila Naidu, consultant clinical psychologist at Oakridge School.

The guest speaker Dr Usha Naik spoke about the current status of inclusive education in regular schools with research data. She discussed problems faced by parents and professionals in mainstreaming students with learning difficulties.

Ms. Farida Raj, highlighted the critical issues in inclusion of students with learning difficulties shared her thoughts about inclusive education. Dr. Shakila Naidu, school psychologist gave an overview on Inclusive education and urged that schools should equip teachers and spread awareness on the importance of inclusion.

A ‘  Special Learning needs ‘ week  was celebrated from 14^th November to 18^th November 2011 at. the school This is an annual event  conducted for promoting  awareness  about special educational needs and learning disorders  for our teachers, students and parents.

The special learning needs week was inaugurated at the Monday assembly with a guest lecture by Ms. Manisha, parent of a child with dyslexia and president of DAAP (Dyslexia Association of A.P) . She spoke about her struggle in getting services for special learning needs and how DAAP was born.

Principal Capt Rohit Sen Bajaj spoke about the importance of Supportive instruction unit and how it is catering to students with learning difficulties which has helped to bridge the gap between learning potential and academic performance in these students.

An Open forum for Oakridge school parents and teachers was organised on Friday, 19^th November. Awareness material was displayed on identification of specific learning disorders and causes for academic underachievement. This helped teachers and students to gain more insights on learning difficulties.

Exhibits on remedial instruction techniques such as phonic  remediation,and multisensory teaching methods were explained. Learning resources, modules of English and Math teaching strategies for junior and senior school students with learning difficulties were demonstrated.

Short poems, fun activities were presented during the assembly by our students on the topics of learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia. The S.I week was a huge success and generated a lot of interest among staff and students of Oakridge school.

Julian F. Detmer, founder of the Detmer Woollen Company, which became the world’s largest distributor of woollens to the tailoring trade, tells this story:

“One morning, years ago, an angry customer stormed into my office. He owed us $15. He denied it, but we knew he was wrong. After getting several reminders, he came to my office in Chicago to tell me that he not only was not going to pay that bill, but that he would never do a dollar’s business with us any more.

“I listened to him patiently. When he finally simmered down, I said quietly, “Thank you for coming to Chicago to tell me about this. You have done me a great favour. If our credit department annoys you, it can annoy other good customers too, and that would be bad. I am far more eager to hear what you have to say about us. We will write off the $15. You are less likely to be wrong, because you deal with a couple of accounts whereas Detmer’s clerks have to look after hundreds.” Detmer then recommended to this customer another woollen company for his future purchases, and invited him to have lunch with him, to which the customer reluctantly agreed.

“On his return home the customer, moved by the kindness of Detmer, checked his books and discovered a mislaid pending bill for $15! He rushed to Detmer Woollen Company, paid the dues and placed a larger order than ever before. Later, when his wife gave birth to a baby boy, he gave his son the middle name of Detmer and remained a friend and customer of the house until his death twenty two years later.”

Never argue with anyone who thinks he/she is right. Give a patient hearing to anyone who wishes to speak with you. Take decisions slowly. Believe in the honesty of people, and they too will display their honesty. Problems can be more easily solved through gentle talk and patient listening than through anger and arguments.

Yamuna, the polluted river

Yamuna River has become one of the dirtiest rivers in the country. Delhi(India) generates about 3,267 million litters of sewage per day (MLD) while the city's installed waste water treatment capacity is only 2,330MLD.

Incidentally, India generates 1.2 million tones of solid waste everyday, of which only 60 per cent is recycled.

There is a need for action now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As part of my contribution, I have cleaned up my trash after firing crackers during Diwali. I will dispose trash, by seggregating it and work on recycling it.
