Working on a science project especially a chemistry project is not as easy as it sounds. 69 students working with the help of 4 teachers was quite a task. It all culminated into a delightful assortment of displays, experiments, finished products etc. The broad topic covered in the exhibition was ‘CHEM Mystery’. For the budding chemist it was a hands-on experience whether it is soap making, candle making, forensic sciences, electrochemical cells, slime preparation, density column, dancing spaghetti, bio-diesel, analysis of vinegar, polymers, detergents, ester preparation, allotropes of carbon, blue-bottle etc. The Chemistry exhibition was awarded an equal second prize with Physics Exhibition. This award was not possible without the hard work and cooperation of students. A Big Thank You to all students and special thanks to Ms. Pratima, Ms. Reena and Ms. Veena for the extraordinary support given to the students.

FOOD FIESTA IN SECOND GRADE

This year second grade teachers along with their coordinator ,Mrs. Anuradha Sahwney & in collaboration with the class representatives are trying innovative ways to educate and assess the students. One such example was the informed assessment “The Food Fiesta” in connection to the unit of inquiry Wellness Wonder.

The aim was to assess the children on their selection, preferences and the practice of daily hygiene while selecting their choices from the foods displayed in their classrooms. The evaluation was fun yet challenging for the students as they were to make a balanced choice while putting some foods away from their list.

All the class reps were able to acquire the food items from their respective class parents. Seven food groups were displayed majorly Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Meats and beans, Milk and milk products, Fats and oils and others.

The kids were very conscious however they followed the guidelines given by their teachers and they made their choice. Kids also reflected on the choices they made. Few of them were glad they tasted lettuce and vegetable juice and had already made an action plan to make these two essential in their meals.

Overall this assessment had given them first hand experience on how the selection of different food groups help them in maintaining a balanced life and how some foods should be eaten in minimal quantity.

IB Regional workshop

The IB workshop (for the Asia Pacific Region) was held at Stonehill International School, Bangalore. I attended the same for the Biology Level 2 segment. There were 14 other participants for the Biology segment 2 from schools in India and abroad.

Our Resource person was Ms. Eirwen Stevenson from Australia. She brought with her the rich experience of being a Biology teacher for The IB Diploma Programme for 20 years besides being a moderator for IAs and examiner for Paper 3 for many years.

The three days workshop included sessions on Curriculum Review, Internal assessments, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge in Biology besides several interactive sessions which exposed us to the very core of Group 4 In the IB Hexagon and the importance of Biology as a subject in this group.

She let us mark some papers as well as labs and EE and compare our grades with hers……….. It opened our eyes to a new dimension of examining papers and moderating the same.

I personally benefitted a lot from this rich learning experience. 

Exhibition exposition

All over Grade Two’s the teachers focused on different concepts keeping in mind the theme – Sharing the Planet. In II B the focus was on speaking skills. Children came up with essential agreements on how they can save their planet. One of them was to plant more trees and to minimize the waste by reusing lot of things around them. They made a beautiful concrete jungle out of recycled materials as seen in the picture below.

Lot of attractions was displayed in the classroom to make the parents realize the importance of the 3R’s. The major allure were the three shows; dialogue between the Green and Brown tree, a debate whether to build a concrete Jungle or Green Planet and a conversation in the form of a song which reflected on the tone we use when someone keeps on nagging the other.

Overall we were able to capitalize the parents as well as the Chief Guests who arrived in our classroom. Kids were able to spread the message to use paper wisely and buy products which has less packaging and try to be planet pals by growing more plants than building a concrete city.  Some of the responses by parents were captured in the picture below

To conclude we now should take steps to use less and wisely as there is no planet B for us to begin with….

The MUN exhibition was put up for the first time in Oakridge and the response was very encouraging. The parents found the exhibition unique and suggested we should have such varied topics which genuinely sets one thinking about the solutions to the current problem at a global level. The presentation about the experience of Oakridge students in the model conferences was well appreciated and very informative. Parents were inspired and wanted their children to be a part of MUN.

On the 10^th Founder’s Day the IT department has showcased the exhibits in which students of all grades have projected their IT skills. Using different softwares, students have designed Games, Animated short stories and Movies, and gave Live Demonstrations.

Some of the exhibits were: Live demonstration on Biometrics using Java programming, 3D modeling using Google Sketch up, Games which are developed using Flash Animation, 2D & 3D Animation using Pivot, Stykz figures and iclone, Short Movie on   “No Smoking” using Toom Boom Studio, Web Designing using Front Page, Designing games using RPG Maker XP, Live demonstration of Computer Hardware.   

The feedback from the Chief Guest and all the parents was amazing and awesome.
