We had a parent guest lecturer relating to our topic ‘CELEBRATIONS ‘

Mrs. Sarasvani mother of Angad bhargav PP2B showed a PPT presentation for Christmas festival and interacted with the students. She also explained the importance of CHINESE NEW YEAR .The students thoroughly enjoyed the paper folding and cutting activity. They had a surprise “PINATA” rain with lots of candies and small musical instruments. The session ended with lots of fun.

Eyes are windows to the soul

 

Eyes are windows to the soul; they are the source of the beautiful sense of sight. The L V Prasad Eye Institute is a hospital for the blind, people with low vision and any problems regarding the eye .We had a talk by Beula Christy,In charge ,LVBEI rehabilitation centre on what they do and how ,we ,as privileged students, find an opportunity to walk one step with them to build their life.

LIBRARY WEEK

The Oakridge Junior School PYP Library celebrated its Library Week from 14^th of November to 18^th of November. The theme was: “Read and Watch your World Grow”.

There were activities also conducted in library for all the Graders. The Grade 1 children drew the Title of their favorite Book; Grade 2 involved themselves in a story, thought and wrote that if they were a main character of a story, which one would it be...They also recognized the PYP Profiles and Attitudes in their favorite character. The Grade 3 students made the Book mark beautifully and wrote the slogan on Reading, Knowledge and Library. The Grade 4 children wrote their Favorite Story, its Characters, summary of the story, PYP Profiles and Attitudes on the cloth to make the Book Quilt. Grade 5 & 6 children actively participated in the competition Treasure Hunt game and also they were asked to give the list of their inspired Books. The selected children are writing the Book report. Throughout the school, the DEAR DAY was celebrated on 15^th of November from 2.30 to 3.00 pm. The book exhibition cum sale was on 17^th and 18^th of November.

We had Library Assembly on 16^th i.e., on Wednesday and it was appreciated by everyone. Children of Grade 6 performed a skit on “Genres” and at the end they explained about the Genres. On 2^nd day, children performed a skit on the famous authors. On 3^rd day, students enjoyed with the Brainstorming riddles on library. On the last day, in the assembly children showed “ OUR WORLD OF PYP IN THE LIBRARY”, which expressed how PYP trans-disciplinary skills are integrated with the Library.

It’s my pleasure to share that students are expressing their feeling saying “We love this week”, “we like library assembly”.

Parent Speak

I walked in at the Snack time. There was one child seated having her noodles with a fork, another eating idlis, one with his bottle of milk and others playing. The class was all happy and noisy.

Then the class teacher announces ‘Its story Time’ ….I was amazed at the discipline, most children were seated waiting for the story, the others, with one more announcement were perfectly in their place. The class was seated in a perfect semicircle waiting for their story. Honestly I did not expect this kind of obedience with 3 year olds (hats off to the teachers).

The first story was ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’

I was prepared to read only one story, assuming that children of this age will not be attentive to story reading.

Again to my surprise, they all listened attentively, some also contributed…..and finally they wanted one more. So this time it was ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. Surprisingly they wanted one more. So the class teacher gave me ‘The Big Pink Bubble’ story book.

So after three consecutive stories, the children seemed very happy.

This was a completely wonderful experience for me.

ACTION IN PYP BY MR.MURRAY SCOBLE

The workshop on Action in PYP was conducted by Mr. Murray Scoble from November 24th to November 27th 2011. Mr. Murray steered the workshop with ingenuity and enthusiasm. It was an enlightening and enriching experience for the teachers. The readings given by him were an eye opener for many of us. He stressed on the importance of nurturing the culture of inquisitiveness in the school and motivating the students both intrinsically and extrinsically. He spontaneously led us into the action component of the PYP. Truly an intellectually fulfilling experience.

Oakridgers in the Andhra Pradesh Basketball Team

Our district team came together a little while ago after a round of selections, and it was quite pleasant to see that a lot of student ofOakridge International made this district teams, the students were, Arvind Achanta, Akilesh Achanta and Jaipal Reddy among the boys, Anisha Alla, Mounika Burugupalli, Simran Jain, Shreya Jain and Alisha Sarna from the girls.

The main challenge started when we began our little journey started on the 18^th of November, when we as team, both the boys and girls, drove down to Narayanpuram, a small town about 40kms away from Ellore. On arriving, we split up and went to our respective venues of stay. We were representing the district, Ranga Reddy, under which our school’s location falls.
Both the boys and girls reached the finals, and played very tough matches, and lost by very close scores, 57-53 for the boys, and 32-25 for the girls. We found it quite exciting, trying to adapt to the crowd, the place, the weather, etc.

We were quite sad at our loss. But at the same time, 6 boys made the A.P team probable, and in the end, 3 boys and 2 girls from the Ranga Reddy team made the State Team, and will be attending the National Tournament in the end of December in Delhi. From Oakridge, ARVIND ACHANTA and ANISHA ALLA, were the 2 students who were finally selected as part of the Andhra Pradesh State team. It was quite impressive, and we felt very happy and proud that our hardwork paid off. We are both now practicing hard at our game, to see that we can be at our best form by December, to outdo ourselves at the Nationals.

Amity International MUN 2011

The MUNs seem to be catching up with the Oakridgers and there have been representations from our students in all the major MUN conferences across the world with some of them having five to six MUNs to their credit. Janardhan a Grade XI student attended one such conference hosted in Delhi by Amity International. It was a ‘very enriching experience’ for him and this is what he has to say……

Applause rang all around me. The committee I participated in at Amity International MUN 2011, the Russian Security Council (SC) in the Joint Crisis Committee (JCC), was a unique experience in many ways. The JCC was being simulated for the first time at a school-level MUN, and its features, operations, methodology and aims were extremely different from the usual committees undertaken by the Organising Committee (OC) at an MUN. Unlike the United Nations Organization committees usually simulated, the JCC consisted of the SC’s of the Federation of Russia and the United States of America; they would consist not of delegates acting as representatives of UN nations, but rather as Ministers on the Cabinet of Russia and the USA. They would be presented with specific situations which brought the national security of ‘their’ nation under threat and would require them as Directors of federal organizations, heads of ministries and ambassadors, to collaborate and provide extremely specific and detailed solutions as suggestions of clear cut actions, called directives, to the President of their nations, which then it was upon the discretion of the President to adopt or reject. We acted as an advisory body.

I participated in the role of the Russian Minister of Emergency Situations, General Sergei Shoygu, in the Russian Security Council. We had no set topics, and were expected to conduct whatever research we considered relevant. We literally went in not having a clue as to what was going to happen. On the first day they provided us with a briefing as to how committee would function and progress, and how we were to conduct ourselves. As debate began, we quickly learned this was to be an MUN we would never forget, for better or worse.

We planned how to best interrogate and decipher the meaning of information a captured American spy told us and related issues, how to ensure the Americans could not eliminate said spy, how best to remove the eminent threat of nuclear attack upon us from the Arctic, the meaning of military operations escalations from the US CIA, political conflict, and this is just a summarization. The intensity, the dialogue, the research, the results, each and every single bit of interaction that occurred between the people in that room and with the US SC at a joint diplomatic talk staged in ‘Moscow’(our committee room) was high octane, active and as diverse from the placental UN committees as possible.

The adrenaline rush was a new MUN experience, when compared to committees where strict parliamentary procedure is followed, rendering the exciting situations dull. The strongest learning experience of any MUN yet, as our EB was hands on, our work unique, my committee-mates amazing people.

An MUN is always much more than committee participation and AIMUN provided me with a great opportunity to meet and interact with many interesting people and build friendships throughout the resplendent journey. There were also international delegates participating, from Germany, Mauritius and Pakistan, and the event was also memorable as I interacted with our brothers from across the border, and we put all the hate our countries harbor towards each other and just had some fun. The socials were dull, the hostel disgusting, but the opportunities and moments un-forgettable.

AIMUN 2011 was held from 17^th-19^th November, 2011. It had a wonderful opening ceremony with a speech from the Head of UNESCO for India and Bhutan, the Hungarian Ambassador to India, The Secretary-General, a note sent specially by Ban-Ki Moon, the UNO Chief, and the Head of AIMUN event.

Art Competition by The Hindu Daily

Nikhil Jain of grade 9 A won the first place- a cash prize of Rs 5000/- and Veda Kasireddy of grade 10 A won second place - a cash prize of Rs 3,000/- in the senior category of "On the Spot Painting Competition" conducted by The Hindu Daily on 27th Nov 2011.

 

Oakridge – A Concept Based School

We had a “Concept Driven Workshop” from 25^th to 27^th of November, conducted by Ms Jacqui Patrick. It was indeed a wonderful session! We all understood the “Role of Concept” at every stage, in making the planner. Not just the planners, but they can be associated with any real life situation.

Hyderabad 10K run

10k run

A 10k run was held at Necklace road on 27-11-11 Sunday.

It was a pleasant morning and I was very excited to take part in the 10k run. Seeing the huge crowd, I was somewhat anxious, as that was the first time I was participating in an event of this kind that too in an unfamiliar environment. But soon the run started and I became enthusiastic because I was looking forward to it. I was accompanied by my uncle and brother. Many people, including celebrities, sportsmen, politicians and school students took part in the run.

My goal was to run 10km .From our school, the principal and a number of students took part in this event. I completed 10k run with our school .I was the youngest participant in the run and take pride in saying that!

I want to thank you for giving me the wonderful opportunity of sharing some stories and rhymes with your class today. Amitesh and we both had a great story telling experience. I have attached few clippings along with this mail which actually captured the curious little faces. I am surprised that they are able to follow the story line and express their thoughts with a word or a smile. Story telling always interest kids but now I understood that one of the best ways to improve kids learning experience is through puppet shows.
