Talk Show on Government

Oakridge Newton Campus was abuzz with the news of arrival of the Shri. Prasad kumar Gaddam (Hon. Minister for Textiles). This was for a Talk Show on the topic “Government”. It kicks started with a PPT by the students explaining to him what they have learnt about the unit. Then the students shot questions at the Minister.
Students were very enthusiastic and were asking questions to him like:

• What are your functions as the Minister of Textiles?

My duties are to improve the weavers’ community and grant them loans. We have opened a separate bank for women “Srinidhi bank” with 15,000 crores to develop the needs of the women.

• Can you be the Textile Minister forever or is there a time limit?

I am appointed by the Chief Minister .As long as our party is in power and the Chief Minister wishes, I will be in my post.

• Can you make the decisions on your own or should someone accept it?

If yes, who is the person?
There are 285 posts and 15% of MLAs are selected by the CM. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi President of National Congress Party and cabinet should accept it.

• What role did you take for the cyclone affected people? What was your response to them?

The cyclone “Nilam” created a lot of damage to our state and destroyed 20,000 acres of farms. My duty is to give those clothes, rice and Rs 5000 to each.

It was indeed a great learning to the students.

‘Sharing the Planet’

Students of Grade VI, working on the PYP Exhibition, took part in ‘Sharing the Planet’ Conference. They are working on issues like: Water Scarcity, Global Warming, Waste Management and Animal Rights were grouped together and they discussed the relevance and inter connectivity of their issues. They worked around the statement ‘Humans in an effort to create a more comfortable world for them forget the damage being done to the earth, natural resources and animals in the process.’ The discussion that took place was amazing and the students came up with wonderful points. This also showed the depth of the knowledge they have gained through the series of guest lecture and field trips.

The World of Physical Education with a Change

Focusing on one of the concept-change, Grade V students were initially were divided into small groups and informed to play games like cricket, soccer and tennis with the actual rules of these games. Later students had an opportunity to discuss and modify the rules of these games (at least 2-3 modifications per game) and play. The students then had a reflection time. They reflected on the pros and cons of these games before and after the rules of these games were changed. Some of them felt the games were easier to play with changed rules while the others felt it otherwise.

Class Talk of Grade V

India is a democratic state. We all have the right to Freedom of Speech and Expression- one of our Fundamental Rights (Article 14- 32). The Oakridgers also have the same right that is why we had a CLASS TALK where every individual got a chance to speak about their favorite leader who inspired them the most. They dressed up like them and shared their views with the entire class. In their topic ‘Government’ the learners came to know about the various rights which are enshrined in the Constitution. It was a great learning experience for all.

Mock Election of Grade V

Students of Grade V participated in elections for various posts, like Class President, CAS President, Event President, etc. They prepared ballot boxes & placards and gave the speech as to why they are suitable for the post. They campaigned with their party symbols and called others to vote for them. They cast the vote to their favorite candidates and dropped in the polling booth. Later indelible ink was smeared on their finger nails. Through this mock election they got a clear picture as to how elections are conducted and eventually how their leaders are elected.
