One Nation Reading Together — Books are Our Best Friends

On 29 November, the students of Pre-primary experienced a very captivating and invigorating Book Reading Session by participating in ONRT — One Nation Reading Together. The students read interesting books like Pepper, Bubbles, Lady Bugs series, Bob Books etc.

Reading is an integrated part of our Language curriculum. Our students focused and enjoyed reading what in turn helps them become more knowledgeable, confident and self-managed. As the proverb goes “Books are Our Best Friends,” we are never alone with a book by our side. It’s a silent friend.

Student Reflection on Assembly Conducted by 6E

Grade 6E had the pleasure and privilege of conducting the morning assembly.  We commenced the assembly with the prayer, thought for the day and choir song. Our assembly was related to our School motto, ''learning the treasure within.'' We were trying to render that every individual has a unique talent.

We presented a skit showing the relevance of all of us and how each one of us is significant in our own distinct way.  This skit explained that each and every one of us is gifted, and all we need to do is identify our talents and excel in it.

We concluded that this is what our School believes in as it is stated in the School motto. The assembly fostered students an opportunity to open up and share their thoughts with their peers. Further, it instilled in them a sense of pride and confidence to be able to speak in front of a large gathering.

All in all, it was a well-conducted assembly.

Never Give Up — Assembly by 3H

“Do it again. Play it again. Sing it again. Read it again. Write it again. Sketch it again. Rehearse it again. Run it again. Try it again.
Because again is practice, and practice is improvement, and improvement only leads to perfection and Never, Never, Give up”.

Keeping this in mind, kids of grade 3 conducted an amazing skit on Never Giving up in their Assembly.

Student Reflection on Guest Lecture

On the 29th of November 2013, we had a guest lecture on currency by Mrs. Renu Chaturvedi. She told us that, the whole world fixed one unified currency, which all countries can compare their own currencies to. This is the American dollar. She also told us about the great depression, how it was the world’s deadliest threat to the economical society, in history. She told us when these types of wars happen; the money used for trading was used to buy weaponry.

She told us that, people over the world wanted to prevent world war 3, so United Nations was formed with the help of a few countries. Later on most of the countries in the world joined this organization. She told us about the different forms of money and what they were called.

I conclude that this was a very informative lecture, and I am looking forward to more lectures which are as informative as this one.

Students of Grade 8 used nets containing 2D drawings to explore 3D shapes. They were divided into groups and given an A4 size coloured sheet to draw a net for the solid shape allotted to them. They created the net and from the 2D drawings constructed the 3D shape.

Various nets were drawn to create common 3D shapes such as cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, tetrahedron, and pyramids. It was a fun exploration and students admired their own creations at the end.

‘ShowCASe’ — Sharing Oakridge’s Vision of CAS

CAS has always been the ethos of Oakridge and has inspired students to give back to society by participating in several community service activities.

The morning of November 29th 2013 was witness to a showcase of these efforts. ‘ShowCASe’, as this event was called, presented the outcomes of the CAS activities initiated by school such as the Spoorthi programme, Treasure Fest, Icebreaker camps and Model United Nations Conferences. Dr. Ram graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

In the presence of the Principal and other members of the Senior Management Team, the helping staff of the school was specially felicitated for its painstaking efforts. The school atrium was a visual delight as students had put up charts and films reflecting the CAS activities and their learning experiences.

It was a joy to share Oakridge’s vision and we hope that the spirit of CAS echoes in the world community. And Oakridgers are all set to spread the word, through their actions. Believe in Oakridge.

Student Reflections on Spoorthi Session on 24 November, 2013

It was an amazing day from the very start—we as well as Spoorthi kids were very excited for this experience. It gives me happiness as I could to something for the society and help the needy. It was not a one-way learning as I thought it would be, a girl from 9th grade asked a question to which I could give an answer.

One thing that these kids reminded me of was that to never give up; these kids lacking opportunities are still trying their best to study and become successful. After teaching them Science, Math, English and Computers, we even got to play with them which was fun.

I am looking forward to attend many other Spoorthi sessions.

Spoorthi is by far one of the best concepts of CAS known to me. Held on Sundays, Spoorthi is a perfect example of a beginning step of any change. It was a great experience teaching the young and curious children and giving them the opportunity that they deserve. The kids who had come were very astonished to see the school that we study in and would definitely want to study in such a great school. It was a pleasure and a delight teaching them and I am looking forward to attend the session again.

Grade 3 Field Trip to Gold Workshop — Meenakshi Jewellers

In connection with our on-going Unit of Inquiry ‘Materials,’ students of Grade 3 (E, G, H, J) went on a field trip to Meenakshi Jewellers Gold Workshop on 28-29 November, 2013.  Learners got an insight into the process of making of gold jewellery from solid gold. They witnessed the entire process of jewellery making and various changes associated with it. It was a very informative and interesting trip.

The learners were very enthusiastic and curious to know about the entire process which was evident from the questions they were asking. We would also like to thank our parent Mrs. Sheetal Agarwal of 3G for the wonderful arrangement and hospitality at the workshop for our learners.

A Date with the Dentist

Dr. Sunitha, Parent of Aanya from PPID, had volunteered to come as a guest Lecturer on 27 November 2013 for our ongoing POI topic Community Helpers. She is a Dentist by profession and she explained to the children about mouth hygiene and healthy food habits. She showed all the different tools which a dentist uses to fix cavities.

We really appreciate and thank her for showing such great enthusiasm and giving her quality time for showing our children how a dentist helps the community.
