What ails student teacher relationship....

I was watching the news clipping on NDTV about the Chennai teacher murder incident that sent shock waves across cities. No matter how provoking the reason nothing can justify the act of a 13 year old resorting to murder but it is definitely an indication of the pressures children go through. I feel parents and teachers must wake up to the fact that children need to be dealt with lot of care and understanding keeping in mind that we do not hurt a child's self esteem. It is important for us to realize that there is less tolerance among children now and so even in a school environ we must be vigilant to any early warning signs and counsel the child. The incident has suddenly brought to light the complacent attitude of parents and teachers to a child's emotional needs. 'Are we providing an avenue for our children to release their anger and other feelings? It is inhuman to expect the children do not have any feelings. We should compulsorily make them play football or basketball so that they get a first hand experience of defeats, wins, losses and humiliation. They should be personally exposed to all these situations' says Prof. Nair, head, department of psychology, Mahatma Gandhi College, Trivandrum.

In my interactions with the children I have noticed that students respond positively to teachers who treat them with respect and encourage them in a positive way. Alternately there are children who feel humiliated whether in class or home if we show distrust in our dealings with them. The best part of teaching is we are blessed with the opportunity of molding young minds in a positive way, building their self esteem and confidence to face challenges but the question remains how many of us are committed to do so?
