Leadership Workshop for Oakridge Coordinators

The coordinators of Oakridge schools from different campuses gathered at ICRISAT on August 3^rd , for a two day Leadership workshop work shop by Mr.  Subbu Parameswaran.    

Like any workshop it started with an introduction, but with a twist, where each member had to introduce their adjacent member and had to  say what that member did something new and good in the previous week, what was their expectation from this workshop .

This set the note for the workshop, where in the two days many aspects of leadership was discussed like – leadership style , giving feedback, accountability , mastering conflict, delegating, generating ideas and lateral thinking.  There were role plays with common scenario which were enacted, observed and analyzed and the course of action discussed. The session ended by a self reflection of being a role model as a leader.

“Management of Children with Learning Difficulties”- Workshop

(Dyslexia and Attention problems)

Venue :Montessori Training and Research Center

The workshop was organized by Dr. Usha Naik a leading child psychiatrist DAAP and Mrs. Manisha president [DAAP]. Mrs. Begum Bilquis Latif was the guest of honour. Workshop was attended by teachers of many reputed Montessori schools in Hyderabad.

The 2 day workshop dealt with 4 main aspects

· Sensory Processing Disorder by Mrs. Farida Raj- Special Educator and Author of the book “Breaking Through

· Assessment by Mrs. Pooja Jha- Rehabilitation Psychologist

· Behaviour Management by Mrs. Gouri Reddy- Child Psychologist

· English Teaching by Ms. Afshan Jabeen- Dyslexia Therapist and AMI Montessorian.

The main aim of the workshop was to sensitize parents and empower teachers towards children having difficulties such as ADD, ADHD and slow learners. The session emphasized on “Specific Learning” issues at school level and showed ways to recognize and help children ‘at risk’. We also got to know of diverse teaching techniques in English for such special children.

During the sessions, Dr. Shakila Naidu added valuable insights and shared her views on the topics covered. The OIS

S.I unit teachers got an opportunity to present the techniques/ teaching strategies used in our resource room.

The presentation on behaviour management was beneficial; we could implement a few activities in the 3B classes in our school.

In all, it was a good learning experience.

Students Deserve the Best!-Preventing Bullying in School

 

    

Great teachers help create great students! In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support experienced educators. There was a Professional Development Workshop on

“Preventing Bullying in school “by Mr. Stan Davis on 22nd Oct 2011 from 9:00am – 4:00pm in the MPH Oakridge International School, Newton Campus, Khajaguda. This initiative taken by the Principal of Oakridge International School Newton Campus Capt. Rohit Sen Bajaj and the Edu division of People Combine Group.

It was our privilege to have Mr. Stan Davis with us who is a Certified Social Worker, Certified Guidance Counselor K-12 and also the co-researcher (with Dr. Charisse Nixon, Penn State Erie) in the Youth Voice Project, gathering information from more than 13,000 teens about what has worked for them in bullying prevention.

Mr. Davis trains and provides consultation for youth, educators, parents, policymakers, and community members and has worked for human rights in many different ways. In the 1960s he worked in the Civil Rights movement.

He has developed bullying prevention interventions and taught and consulted with educators in 31 states in the United States, in Canada, and in international schools in Senegal and Zambia.

He has maintained http://www.stopbullyingnow.com & http://www.youthvoiceproject.com website as a resource for parents, educators, and youth. Cofounder, International Bullying Prevention Association.

Mr. Davis’s professional development program and training involved integrated research, practical experience, specific techniques, storytelling, and audience participation.

During the program he enlightened us on the following:

· Appropriate methods to prevent, as well as to immediately and effectively intervene to stop, bullying;

· Information on the interaction and power relationship between and among the bully, his or her victim, and those who witness bullying incidents; and

· Research findings on bullying, including information on types of students particularly at-risk for school bullying.

This workshop was attended by the Principals of Newton Campus, Einstein Campus, Westwood Tenali, Vice Principal, HM & Bursar Newton campus, Coordinators, Student Advisors, House Staff and Teachers of Oakridge International School Newton & Einstein, Campus Westwood Vizag & Tenali.

We at Oakridge firmly believe that it is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn as it keeps the teachers up-to-date on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more.
