Grade IV's Global Children Challenge

The day we received our pedometers was the most exciting day for all of us. As the days progressed we tried new ways to increase our steps. Some of us started walking around our house whenever we are idle, joined dancing classes, cycling and playing out with friends instead of watching television or playing video games. We are excited to reach a new location on GCC website each day.  On World Heart Day we were able to identify that exercising is also a way to keep our heart healthy when we gathered and shared information in the assembly and classroom. This has motivated us further. Today we have reached 21^st location (Antsohihy, Madagascar) on GCC map.

Week of Special Learning Needs Assembly

The counseling & supportive Instruction Unit under the guidance of the School Psychologist, Dr. Shakila Naidu at Oakridge International School had organized awareness program for the week of special learning needs. As a part of it, the student volunteers of Grade V & VI conducted the assembly.

The assembly began with a prayer followed by a group song. The theme of the assembly was “inclusive Education”. Information which was of relevance with the children was also shared. The thought for the day was “Life is full of challenges, How you handle these challenges is what builds the character, Never be afraid to be who you are” by Erin Bro Cko Vich, a famous dyslexic was given to support the theme.

A skit was performed by the children to spread awareness of the difficulties children face and the kind of support given to them to overcome difficulties. Appreciation certificates were given by the Principal, Mr. Rohit Sen Bajaj to the Grade XII students who had volunteered last year for the week of Special learning needs.  

Guest Lecture for Grade V

Mr. Prakash working for United Technologies gave Guest lecture on Sensors for Grade V. He was throwing more light on how the changes took place and going on in technological advancements. He made it very interesting for learners to understand the level of advancements happening in science today. Learners were very enthusiastic in knowing the facts and were clarifying their doubts. The guest lecture was success.

IBDP- In-House Workshop on Motivational Strategies

The IBDP segment attended an In-House Workshop on Motivational Strategies. The Workshop facilitator Mr. Biju Baby, Diploma Program Coordinator shared some very insightful and pedagogically useful tools that can be incorporated in Classroom Teaching.

The entire DP faculty was divided into groups of 4 each. The workshop began with an interesting presentation on motivation. It was a flow chart based on the working of an internal combustion engine. Each component was related to a key term on motivation and were asked to study the same and draw inference in groups and then share the points discussed. Each group came up with very interesting set of points which all deliberated upon.

Mr. Biju Baby also shared relevant resources on “Motivating Students: Creating an Inspiring Environment” and advised to pick the two best and relevant points under:

• Establishing inclusion: To develop a suitable learning environment which is based on mutual respect and bonding.
• Developing attitude: Creating a positive inclination in student towards the subjects they are learning.
• Enhancing meaning:  To create engaging and challenging learning experiences in class that are student-centric and relevant.
• Engender Competence: To instill a sense of confidence in students that they have effectively learned something which adds value to their present knowledge and is authentic to their real world.

The session ended with all the participants definitely enriched and better equipped with the necessary tools on motivating students.

Children of grade VII & VIII participated in "Oakridge Chef", Inter House Competition. They displayed their culinary skills with great enthusiasm.  

Global Children's Challenge

“The healthier we are, the better we feel”. Grade V E can sum up their journey so far in Global Children’s Challenge with this line. It has been 20 days since we have started the challenge and the enthusiasm is sky high. The students have joined badminton classes, are jogging, cycling and going for morning and evening walks just to stay active. The pedometers are acting as motivators because everyone wants to record their best step count. In the last 20 days we have crossed many destinations and learnt a lot about these places. Everybody wants to visit the Galapagos Islands to see the Iguana. The Angel falls have made our eyes open in wonder and the Amazon forest scared us. We are at Cape Town at present and exploring the place. Not only the students but the parents are also showing a lot of enthusiasm. They are our pillars of support. Individual commitment and a group effort is driving us towards our goal.

Grade V Working on NASA Competition

Students of Grade 5 are working on NASA Competition in collaboration with ICT in relation to their Unit- Science and Technology. The Theme of the Competition is "How will humans use science and technology to explore space, and what mysteries will we uncover?"

The students representing their school are so excited to be the part of a global challenge. They have set their goals and working for it. A Challenge was never such a fun.

Week of Special Learning Needs

Special  learning Needs  week started with the children taking up a special assembly for presenting  the sensitivity and the emotions of the special need children. The teachers of S.I Unit displayed various resources and strategies for teachers to understand and take some tips back in the class to help these students

Evacuation Drill For Junior School

The junior school participated in the Evacuation Drill. The students came to know the pathway & gathered in the soccer ground. Bursar sir asked questions and gave information on how to utilize the pathway in different situations.

HOMAGE TO NEIL ARMSTRONG-FIRST MAN ON THE MOON

Students of Grade V mourned on the demise of Neil Armstrong, the first man to land on the moon, whose contribution is unmatched in the history of Space." One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", rightly said by him. Students currently were going through the unit Science and Technology, where they read so much about the contribution of NEIL ARMSTRONG, suddenly when they heard, they were grief stricken and paid their last tribute to him. We at Oakridge really salute the legend of space for his great service to entire mankind.

Grade VI A- "The Electricity Rangers"

The ongoing electricity crisis has forced everyone to stop and think. Think of ways to conserve electricity. When the crisis was discussed with the students of grade VI A they volunteered to form a system to check the usage of electricity in their classroom. They came up with small measures such as not switching on lights during the day time, try to keep the ACs off when the weather is pleasant, keeping the windows closed when the ACs are on, switching off the monitors when not in use and many more. They resolved to call themselves electricity rangers and have decided to spread this message across the entire grade level and then to the entire school. They have already started taking action which is evident from this picture.

Some students started being more aware of happenings around the city and started collecting articles regarding electricity crisis and sharing with their friends so their resolve to save electricity becomes stronger.
