Students’ Reflections on Spoorthi — April 2014

On the 26th of April, a handful of IB students came together to conduct another Spoorthi session. This time, it was a summer camp where the kids had no academics to do but only co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. We divided Spoorthi students into five groups: Sports, Computers, Dance, Art and Chess. Different students took charge of different groups. In sports, we played soccer and hopscotch. In computer labs, we watched videos about grammar and played educational games. The art students colored and drew and we taught a group of children how to play chess.

It was amazing to watch these kids come alive as they took part in activities they would never have had the opportunity to engage in otherwise. The children were also happy with the gifts we gave them — all donated by students from our school. We hope that we can introduce more hands-on activities in later Spoorthi sessions: For example, by taking students into the science labs and teaching them how to conduct experiments.

We took part in a Spoorthi session where we had to interact with the children of the school staff. The aim of this session was to teach them something and have fun with them. Our fun started with playing football for 2 hours. We gave them tips and techniques to score a goal with ease and gave them penalty shot practice; later, we all played a match to see how much they had grasped. Regardless of the outcome of that match, we all emerged as winners.

After we came inside to cool down, we showed the children how to play some video games and we gave them a chance to play as well. All in all, it was a rewarding experience not just for the children, but for us as well.
