On Saturday, 29th of October grade 2 had organized “I’m Unique” session by the school Psychologist Dr. Shakila Naidu and student advisor Ms. Sharon Santosh. The session focused on positive parenting techniques that are mostly over looked. The prime focus was on the uniqueness of each child.

Parents discussed about the impact of following on the development of the child

· positive influence of parents

· Positive and supportive time

It was a very fruitful session as parents have shared their ideas; expressed their concerns and got the answers from our experts Dr. Shakila Naidu and Ms. Sharon Santosh. Post session parents have expressed their contentment and felt that they need to just do that little bit more to develop their children into mentally, physically and emotionally balanced individuals.

I’m Unique – A forum on positive parenting

DSC_1049  DSC_1052DSC_1070 DSC_1084DSC_1086 DSC_1091DSC_1093 DSC_1097DSC_1106 DSC_1107IMG_3866

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never come again. Apart from teaching our children two and two make four and Paris is the capital of France, are we also teaching them what they are? They are a marvel. They are UNIQUE. They have the capacity for everything!

Are we being sculptors or gardeners? Are we constantly hovering over our kids like ‘helicopter parents’ telling them what to do and what not to, or are we nurturing them with kindness and patience, allowing them to explore, experiment, unlearn & learn? Do we praise our kids based on their abilities or based on their actions?

These were the points of discussion in ‘I’m Unique’, a forum organized on 29th October for parents of Grade 2. Dr.Shakila Naidu the school psychologist and Ms.Sharon the junior school student advisor were the experts on the panel. Nearly 50 parents attended this forum. Parents listened intently to the experts & fellow attendees.

Some of queries raised were –

My son wants to try a new thing every time…he takes dancing classes quits in 3 months….singing classes ….quits in 3 months…what could I do about this?

I am planning to send my older one to boarding school. Is that OK?

How could we avoid shouting at children when they resist?’

My son listens better to his teacher than me!

It is a lot of stress to watch each word that we speak!

Could we talk to children about the authority at school?

What are the best ways to make them believe in themselves?

The expert panel had more than adequate responses to the questions raised by the parents. It was a unique session, a time for reflection to reinforce our thinking or change ourselves if that was the need…

The workshop was about language development, mathematical development and various stages of brain development for children aged from 1 to 6 years. It also focused on Montessori methodology. The session was very informative and encouraged teachers to work towards exploring the innate potential of each child believing each child to be unique and help them to acquire skills and instill the joy of learning which would set the tone for the rest of their lives. It also provided innovative techniques for teaching young children.

In an age of globalization MUNs are fast becoming a tradition in every school not only because they provide a good platform for students to develop their debating skills but also make them aware of problems concerning the world. The students at Oakridge were a part of yet another MUN hosted by the Hyderabad Public School on the 21st of October.

Asifa Hashim the teacher advisor who accompanied the students reports

All the delegates sent by OIS Newton Campus went well prepared. They took with them their experience of the OAKMUN and many other conferences that they had attended. Seven very confident and well informed delegates made impressive speeches, asked relevant questions and came up with accurate answers to questions put to them by members of their respective committees. While Joseph was witty, Aliza was equipped with facts and details of the issues discussed in ECOSOC. Mehek spoke with conviction and clarity and Lucy was precise and good humoured. All delegates presented their points of view in clear, easy to understand language and well-structured manner.

The Crises situations were handled deftly.

Discussions were carried out in polite language and evidence of good vocabulary could be clearly seen.

Each one of the candidates excelled in their slot and was sincere in what they did during the two days I was at Hyderabad Public School.

All in all it was a pleasure to see Oakridge in action. Three students won the Best Delegate awards and one an honorable mention

Great teachers help create great students! In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support experienced educators. There was a Professional Development Workshop on

“Preventing Bullying in school “by Mr. Stan Davis on 22nd Oct 2011 from 9:00am – 4:00pm in the MPH Oakridge International School, Newton Campus, Khajaguda. This initiative taken by the Principal of Oakridge International School Newton Campus Capt. Rohit Sen Bajaj and the Edu division of People Combine Group.

It was our privilege to have Mr. Stan Davis with us who is a Certified Social Worker, Certified Guidance Counselor K-12 and also the co-researcher (with Dr. Charisse Nixon, Penn State Erie) in the Youth Voice Project, gathering information from more than 13,000 teens about what has worked for them in bullying prevention.

Mr. Davis trains and provides consultation for youth, educators, parents, policymakers, and community members and has worked for human rights in many different ways. In the 1960s he worked in the Civil Rights movement.

He has developed bullying prevention interventions and taught and consulted with educators in 31 states in the United States, in Canada, and in international schools in Senegal and Zambia.

He has maintained http://www.stopbullyingnow.com & http://www.youthvoiceproject.com website as a resource for parents, educators, and youth. Cofounder, International Bullying Prevention Association.

Mr. Davis’s professional development program and training involved integrated research, practical experience, specific techniques, storytelling, and audience participation.

During the program he enlightened us on the following:

· Appropriate methods to prevent, as well as to immediately and effectively intervene to stop, bullying;

· Information on the interaction and power relationship between and among the bully, his or her victim, and those who witness bullying incidents; and

· Research findings on bullying, including information on types of students particularly at-risk for school bullying.

This workshop was attended by the Principals of Newton Campus, Einstein Campus, Westwood Tenali, Vice Principal, HM & Bursar Newton campus, Coordinators, Student Advisors, House Staff and Teachers of Oakridge International School Newton & Einstein, Campus Westwood Vizag & Tenali.

We at Oakridge firmly believe that it is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn as it keeps the teachers up-to-date on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more.
