Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift
“Books are the plane, and the train, and the
road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.” Anna

The
Book Reading Project for the month of February was a huge success. Gulliver’s
Travels was the book chosen for the project and students took it with gusto.
Students reported that they enjoyed reading the book as much as they did the
movie.
25%
of the class did a travel brochure and the majority wrote about the Land of the
Lilliput. The class loved the idea of Lilliput land and was enthusiastic about
travelling to the land of small people.
20%
of the class created a comic strip. The class enjoyed drawing Lilliput and
Gulliver. Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds himself a
prisoner of a race of tiny people, less than 6 inches tall.
25%
of the class interviewed Gulliver and Lilliput. The questions and answers were
insightful and a delight to read. The interview showed that students enjoyed
reading the classic. Many students interviewed Lilliput and asked about his experience
in dealing with tall people.
Diary
entries were popular with 30% of the class. The diary entries were an
interesting read and students wrote about the first and second voyage of
Gulliver. The students have taken to reading classics with great enthusiasm and
look forward to the next Book Reading Project.
An Offshoot of the Book Reading Project: Students have developed interest in reading
books. Students take every opportunity to keep reading and it is encouraging to
see this trend amongst the students.
