The
RSEP Project for Grade VII was ‘Swami and Friends’ — the first of a trilogy of
novels written by R. K. Narayan. The novel, Narayan's first, is set in British
India in a fictional town called Malgudi. Malgudi Schooldays is a slightly
abridged version of Swami and Friends.
The students were encouraged to read the
original book and write a summary, review, comic strip, movie script,
travelogue or a dialogue of any two chapters. Students evinced a keen interest
in the book and went on to watch the series that was aired on TV.
30%
of the class wrote a summary of 2 of their favorite chapters from the book. It
was interesting to read their perspective of Swami and his escapades.
35%
of the class wrote a summary of the book and highlighted chapters and episodes
that they found interesting.
20%
of the class presented a comic strip of characters and events. It was a delight
to see the comic strip from the students with some showing talent towards Art.
The
rest of the class wrote a travelogue and it was interesting to see how students
showed a keen interest in expressing their ideas from the book with great
imagination. The class is looking forward to their next RSEP project and it is
wonderful to see students read classics and enjoy writing about them.
