Green Run

Photo0047[1]Photo0057[1]Photo0050[1]

On the morning of March 31st, at 7 a.m., around 25 Oakridge students assembled at the KBR national  Park to take part in the second Oakridge Green Run of the year. The Green Run is an initiative taken up by the Green Rangers and Sports Captains of Oakridge International to foster a sense of awareness in students about the rapidly escalating air pollution in Hyderabad. However, it is also an opportunity to endorse fitness within the school community, as every participant is expected to run a distance of 5-6 km. To further this cause for health awareness, our principal, Captain Rohit Bajaj, has proposed the formation of an Oakridge Runners' Club or a School Track Team. The club will be led by the Sports Captains Atul Lanka and Simran Jain and will organize a run every two weeks for its members. The dates for the inaugural run will be announed as soon as possible All students are encouraged to participate

We hope to see you there!

A presentation by the Seattle faculty

I had the pleasure of giving a presentation about American universities to the students here at Oakridge.  We discussed the different components of a college application and what the most important factors are.  American universities look at more than just test scores and a student’s transcript when making admission decisions.  Factors like a student’s essay, extracurricular activities, and recommendations play a larger role than many students realize.  I was able to provide tips on strengthening an application to an American university.  As a former university admissions Director, I was able to give tips as someone who is used to review thousands of college applications.

The Oakridge students asked exceptional questions.  If I was still an admissions Director, I would admit them all.  I am very impressed by the academic program at Oakridge and the thoughtfulness of the students.  While working in college admissions, I visited hundreds of high schools all over the world;  Oakridge stands out in my mind as one of the very best I have had the pleasure of visiting.

Seattle group visiting a Community Centre

Whatever the barriers I feel we are all endowed with a sensitivity that motivates us to make a difference to people in need. I could observe the same emotion and feeling of reaching out among the Seattle group of students who went on a community service to an institute catering to the mentally challenged children. This is what they had to say…..

Julianna Werfffeli : Seeing all that the school does for the kids in need was very inspiring. I felt it was amazing that in a country with such need,  people go so far and out of their way to help kids with such severe disabilities.

Audrey: I work with a program called Page Ahead in Seattle that supplies books to children in need. It was a very moving experience for me to interact with the children here.

Colin: At home we don’t get the opportunity to interact as much with the people we help. What the organizations here are doing is really noble.

Richard Lee: I was surprised to know that most of the work is taken up by volunteers here and the funds also come from families willing to donate for a good cause.

Tolossa Hassan: I was moved by the experience because I had never been to a community service centre like this before.

Julie : I have done service as a camp counselor…it was an amazing experience to visit the kids in the Special school here in Hyderabad.

University Prep students from Seattle at Oakridge....

The students from University Prep, Seattle walked into the Oakridge campus to a traditional welcome. They were taken around on a school tour and were introduced to a Yoga session and a dance session by the Activity teachers here.

The students also visited a weaving unit run by Mrs.Suraiya who believes in revival of  the Nizami-Persian fabrics. 'It is an incredible and an inspiring experience' said Kelly Herrington the counselor from University Prep. The students found the interaction very informative and interesting, they were fascinated looking at the women work magic on the looms. It turned out to be a tiring day but the students thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the Newton campus.
