The induction process at Oakridge International School, Newton campus, is a simple method that encourages children to gradually gain confidence in their new environment. The most important part of the induction process is making children comfortable at all times at the same time allowing them to experience the fun and exciting surroundings that a nursery can offer.
Day one
Parents were invited to come to the nursery and spend a short time with their child getting accustomed to teachers and a new environment for a period of one hour. The hour was packed with rhymes, introduction of children by parents along with some interesting anecdotes about them. This was followed by few interesting activities for children which included decorating a mask cut-out for take home.
Day two
The day had a theme which was ‘Aqua’ and the students and parents had come dressed in blue. Parents spent a similar amount of time with their child as in day one. Children were encouraged to play and join in some activities getting accustomed to teachers, activities and their new friends. The teachers had done a role play on story “The curious king fish”. Our music teacher ‘David Sir’ had come with different instruments in his magic bag, which the children enjoyed very much. The children made a humpty dumpty balloon with the help of their parents and took it along with them.
Day three
The theme for the day was ‘Go green’ and the children and parents had come dressed in green. The day started with prayer and rhymes. Children were invited to say their favourite rhymes which some of them did enthusiastically. This was followed by a puppet show by the teachers on the story ‘ Greeny the guava’. Later children did some interesting activity with paints making various impressions with leaves. The children took home small saplings in paper cups.
Day four
Day four had a sports theme and everything was set in the PP play area for an outdoor experience with the children. The day started with a circle time including prayer and rhymes. This was followed by various exciting races like hulla-hoop race, airplane race and kangaroo jump race. The spirits of parents and children rose high each trying to beat the other . Though they were exhausted at the end of it they were elated with this experience .
Day five
On day five, children were with their teachers in their respective classrooms for two hours while the parents attended an orientation session. The session was mainly to familiarize the parents with the school environment and culture. It also included a presentation on positive parenting . Meanwhile children were engaged with interesting activities and music .
Thus a week long induction was successfully completed keeping the objective of minimizing the anxiety in both the parent and the child and creating the familiar ambience where the child is happy to spend a considerable part of the day at the nursery.
And the journey begins for our youngest Oakridgers…………
