(Mathematics Convention ………….)
IGCSE MATHE’CON 2012, a one-week program of different events started at Oakridge on 5 March. This was started with a motto‘‘ The fun way of learning.’’ The events highlight the importance of Mathematics as well as getting students to think of Math in a new way. This program mainly aims to promote the positive aspects of the subject and learning it in a fun way.
The first day it was Math Relay and Poster Competition.
Math Relay was conducted amongst 14 groups of different Classes. Each group consisted of three students – one from grade 7 , one from 8 and one from 9
A series of questions were given to each group. Grade 7had to solve the first part of the question and then pass on the answer to the grade 9 student, who then had to work on the next part of the question with the help of this answer. Finally it reaches to the last student who will solve for the final answer. The questions were different and a little tricky.
Poster Competition was held for the students of grade7 and 8.
The challenge was to make a poster that uses pictures to show the difference between a dependent and independent variable. Students participated enthusiastically.
It was graded on a standard criterion i.e.; Pictures used, explanation, Clarity and effort.
On 6March ,there were Displays and Math games. It focused on the ‘play way‘ of learning.Children learn Math while they play and they love it at the same time
It was fantastic to see students as well as teachers being enthusiastic about the Math games and puzzles.
There were games like Polygon Rummy, Percent tiles, Crazy Math, Graph - Equation Card match andso on…..
The Displays covered interesting topics like Fractal Geometry, Mathematics in Art,
Mathematics in Architecture, The Trachtenberg System of rapid mental calculation etc
On 7 March, the students participated in World Math day online competition. They were registered for the same earlier and given a user name and password.
The competition is of five intense levels. Students were able to sharpen their mental calculation skills. It was all about speed and accuracy.
On the Final day of the Math week (9 March)— the students enjoyed two documentary films--BBC Math and Donald Duck in Mathematics Land.
The Math Quiz was held in the afternoon followed by the prize distribution. We are thankful to all those who made this event possible and all the judges who helped decide the winners.
