Student's Reflection: Ripple Tank Activity in Physics Lab

We recently did a lab activity that involved the use of Ripple Tank to study various properties of waves. This was a completely new activity for us, since we had never done anything like this before. The aim was to determine the different effects produced by waves in water. First part involved set-up. We were shown various parts of the apparatus and then the whole thing was put together in front of us, with detailed explanation of each part and its usage.

We moved on to use the apparatus and see what it was like to send ripples through water and what kinds of effects are produced. We were made to understand the wavelength and frequency of the wave we were generating. The waves were displayed under the tank, on a white paper. This made the understanding a whole lot easier. With the help of obstacles, we created external disturbances to the wave and studied the different phenomena: Reflection, Refraction, and Diffraction. Practical demonstration of the wave theory could not be made simpler and fun at the same time!
