Nuestro Viaje a Barcelona, Espana(Our Trip to Barcelona, Spain)

 

I believe the majority of us have exhausted our vocabulary when describing to our peers the astounding experience every one of us had in our visit to Barcelona, Spain. With a group of ten, exalted students and one truly wonderful teacher, Mrs. Hema Chenupathy, the entire trip, from day one, was a memory to be cherished.

Organized by the Spain BCN group, we were received at the airport by one of the three coordinators, who assisted us wholeheartedly throughout. Lasting a total of eight days from March 9^th to March 17^th, each day possessed an inundated itinerary full of classes, sightseeing, trips to the beach and even time for our personal favourite, shopping. Our day commenced at approximately nine o’ clock with two hours of Spanish classes and then an hour of cultural history relating to the historical location to be visited later that day. Between our trips for lunch and dinner we were served exquisite, traditional Spanish dishes that were personally made for our group.

Perhaps our most noteworthy exposures were our interactions at a local facility/hospital that houses patients with cerebral paralysis and at the Spanish school. The first of which gave us an opportunity to extend ourselves to people who were physically disabled and let them gain a feel for the Indian culture. We were greatly touched when one of the women there had expressed, “Because I cannot go to India, India came to me.”

Similarly at the school, we were able to proudly present our country’s heritage to all the students, answer their questions in return and even perform a short dance for them. We were rather apprehensive at first but upon seeing their friendly nature and eagerness to see what we had in store for them, we were able to open up and search for common grounds between us. It is experiences like these in fact that show how puny and insignificant language barriers can be.

While the trip was an additional academic benefit for the Spanish students, the others gained just as much in terms of visiting a new country and appreciating another culture. We were able to surpass our communication difficulties and relish a successful and fruitful excursion. On behalf of every one of us, we recommend this to anyone who is willing to open their mind to a world anew.

Work Place–Grade 3 Unit of Inquiry

 

Based on the unit “Work place” the 3^rd graders invited people from different departments of Oakridge School. They interviewed people from different departments like Accounts, Finance, H.R, Catering, Facility Manger etc. Through their inquiry they were able to understand the interconnectedness of all the departments in the school.

Math Unit -Money - activity

 

Based on the math unit “MONEY” the students of 3^rd grade had a activity where they had to setup

4 different shops.

Guidelines for the task were:

1. Give the price tag for all the items in your shop. (Tag: MRP, Name and Description of the item should be shown).

2. Give a suitable name to your shop.

3. After 2 days must put all the items on discount.

4. Making of your receipts. (Bills).

Interview with - The Bursar

In connection to their unit of inquiry ‘Emergencies”, children of Grade 1 inquired about the safety measures taken by the school during an emergency. The children interviewed the Bursar to find out answers to their questions.

They were curious to know how is our school prepared to face any type of emergency situation. Children showed lots of enthusiasm and curiosity and asked lots of questions very confidently. Bursar took keen interest in answering their queries and gave sufficient information related to it.

Guest Lecture by the Facility Manager

 

Students of Grade 2 had a guest lecture by the Facility Manager Mr.Srinivas. In connection to the POI unit ‘Water’ the students were very curious to inquire about how the school manages this limited resource. His lecture gave the students insight into the distribution of water, storage, treatment and conservation of water in the school. They are now set to visit all the relevant venues in the school premises to see how the water is pumped, treated and distributed.

 

Field trip – PP1

 

All the students of PP1 set out for a field trip to Nehru Zoological park in connection with the POI topic “Living Things”.

The children were excited to see the animals and birds. They went around the zoo in a van where they saw different types of animals & birds .Children were surprised to see huge tortoise and inquired about what they ate, and many more questions,. The highlight of the trip was the giraffe and the white tiger, which attracted the students most.

It was a very good experience for the children as they could make connections with their learning about living things. Once back to school they reflected on their trip through depictions and discussions.

Prayers for the people of Japan – by Grade 1

 

‘Emergencies’ is the current inquiry unit for the children of Grade 1. As the world witnesses the catastrophe that took place in Japan, our 6 year olds too looked out at the world far away and wanted to help. Children brought pictures of the devastation that took place in Japan and discussed the emergency situation that the earthquake and tsunami brought about. They discussed all that they had seen on TV during that weekend; thousands of people had died many more missing or injured and many rendered homeless. The children wanted to help and comfort all those who had suffered in the tsunami in Japan. They came up with various suggestions.

One child, a little boy, told that “his father had a lot of money so he could send money”, another child suggested that “we send clothes” and another child said “let’s call up the place nearest to Japan and request to help them”, “in my dad’s office there are people from Japan, I’ll ask them to help”. Children empathized and put forward different ways to help the people of Japan. A child also proposed that “they pray”. And thus the children of Grade 1 took a thoughtful action and sat down to write their prayers for the people of Japan. Our young citizens continue to do their bit by writing their prayers even today.

Let us also remember to keep the people of Japan in our prayers!

SPOORTHI - EXCITEMENT GALORE

Session VII of SPOORTHI was another name for endless excitement for all enthusiastic participants.

It was attended by 29 children of our sub staff. The teachers Mr. Ravi, Mr. Kishore, Ms Asha, Ms Jyotsna and IBDP Students – Akshat, Min, Pranav, Anisha and Joseph conducted the session.

This session comprised of the much awaited sports activity – Rock Climbing and Basketball and simultaneously assessment of English was done.

Ms Asha enlightened the students on basic safety rules of rock climbing like using safety gear and warm up before a climb which greatly diminishes the risk of injuries. She gave a demo which inspired the children to go ahead with this activity and they enjoyed every minute of it

Mr. Ravi taught the basics that children need to learn before attempting to understand the higher level Basketball like - Out of bounds, Dribbling, Shooting, Fouls and Picking up your dribble.

After the session the children left excited talking about the days learning.
