OZONE DAY QUIZ

September 16 is celebrated as World Ozone Day. To mark this occasion, Ozone day Quiz for the Class 8 CIE segment was conducted. Three sections of CIE Grade 8: 8G, 8H and 8J participated in it.
There were 3 rounds –
MCQ round: It had 10 MCQs on the topic Ozone and its effects.

Visual round: It had 6 questions and the teams were asked to identify the prominent personalities or environmental phenomenon in the picture.
Dumb charades round: Two members of each team had to pick a chit and enact the environmental phenomenon given in the chit. The other two members had to identify the phenomenon.

The audience also had a good time as there were audience questions too. Finally, after a tough fight, Team 8J emerged as the winner, 8H came second and 8G was third.
It was an enriching experience for the students as they learnt so much about Ozone & other important Environmental issues and had fun too.

Field Trip to Dialogue in the Dark: An exploration into Sense Perception as a way of knowing

On the 20th of September, the TOK class of 11 IBDP visited the Dialogue in the Dark exhibition at Inorbit Mall. Dialogue in the Dark is the world’s only dark-themed attraction; once you step inside, you lose your sense of sight entirely in the blackness. You’re forced to make the best use of your other four senses.
The class divided into groups of eight and entered the exhibit one by one. Stepping into the pitch dark for the first time is admittedly a little scary, but after you’ve gotten used to it, there’s a definite feeling of excitement. It’s interesting, and surprising, what you notice without your sense of sight – and even more interesting to see how much you know without it.
The trip to Dialogue in the Dark was fun, but it also had an explicit link to TOK. How important are all the senses in perceiving and, as a result, in knowing? It is funny how even the most casual of tasks can actually offer up a goldmine of questions – and maybe even answers.

Move the Wheel Foundation CAS visit

Students of IBDP Grade 12 had the opportunity to visit the Upper Primary School at Gowlidodi run by Move the Wheel Foundation .They interacted with the children at the school by teaching them basic concepts in Mathematics and English, and also engaging them in games and sports. What caught the eye was the level of interest that the children at the school showed to learning. And this was complemented by the interesting ways the Oakridgers developed in order to effectively share their knowledge. This included songs, and group discussion and games. At the same time the school playground became a reflection of cheerfulness and bond between the children and the Oakridge students. The Oakridge students themselves have had a lot to learn from this experience. Patience as well as organisational and team-work skills had to be put to use. As one of the Oakridge students herself says of the experience – “This visit has enabled me to understand the perspective of people from another walk of life.” True, interacting with children who come from economically or socially disadvantaged families does enable one to count his or her blessings.
Overall, this experience was something that we will cherish as a great way to appreciate the value of education for all and that we are lifelong learners after all.

CIE experience at Singapore International School Confluence!!

On the 12thof September, Singapore international school in Mumbai conducted confluence 2013, an inter-school competition in which Oakridge was one of the 28 schools participating. Me and Ankitha participated in the installations (art) competition under the below 17 category. In addition there were two other girls from 11th IB who accompanied us to confluence; they actively participated in the creative writing competition.
We arrived at the Mumbai airport after a one and half hour journey from Hyderabad at 7 am. We drank a hot cup of Starbucks coffee to relax ourselves and then we proceeded to the school to start off with our competition. After looking at the jaw dropping installations displayed on the topic ‘social issues around the word’ in the school, we were frozen for a few moments.  Although our work carried an important message on ‘woman's harassment’, we thought the creative part wasn’t fitting the T. We thought that the only time we can win the competition is if the pigs start to fly.
However we finished our installation at the given time and to our surprise it turned out to be better than we visualized. After finishing the competition we left the beautiful campus of SIS and boarded a flight back to Hyderabad. We eagerly waited for the results. After four days when the results were finally out. We were shivering, tightening our fist and clenching our teeth hoping for the best . We were so happy when we heard we secured 3rd place. Our hard work has paid off.
Altogether it was a fun experience!

Sum of interior angles of a triangle is 180

A hands-on activity was conducted with 8th graders (CIE) to understand that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180 degrees. Students were given cut outs of a triangle. They were asked to label the angles. They then tore off the corners and placed the torn pieces in a vertical line such that the vertices met. This was the 'aha' moment where the students saw that the three angles put together aligns with a line and forms 180 degrees.
