Every day IS Earth Day

image

I’m sure you are aware that our environment is acting weird lately, summer days are hotter than usual, rainy days are drowning places we never imagined it could, earthquakes are everywhere, volcanoes are being active again, bird and sea creature migrations are getting weirder.

This year, Earth Day turns 41 years old.  It all started back in 1970 with a call from United States Senator Gaylord Nelson to the nation to come together to protect our world and environment. Since that first Earth Day back on April 22, 1970, many things have changed for our environment for better and worse.

Climate change is the greatest challenge of our time. This is our chance to grab our opportunity into turning our world, our only one planet earth into a healthy, clean energy and prosperous economy for our children and our children’s children.

Every day IS Earth Day, whether or not we choose to celebrate it. There is no should when it comes to saving the planet.

PEEK-A-BOO

Nursery children had their first stage show “PEEK-A-BOO” where children did classical and western dance, performed on skit and sang various songs. The event was enjoyable and successful with parents cheering them continuously.

At the end of the event the teachers assured their guidance and support by singing a farewell song for the little ones.

IBAP participants reflections

Oakridge International School has been honoured to host the International Baccalaureate Asia Pacific Workshop for the second time. I as teacher of this great institution feel proud to be associated with a school that shows such warmth and immense hospitality.

I was a part of the Workshop on Written Curriculum with team of 12 participants from different places of Asia head by the workshop leader Ms. Sharron Bailey.

The workshop is a great opportunity provided by the school wherein we get trained on varied areas of PYP in order to enhance our Teaching methodology.

During the course of the Workshop we learnt lot of new strategies and developed great rapport with co participants, but the most important feel good factor was the realization that we at Oakridge are truly in sync with the PYP .

Thank you Oakridge for the wonderful opportunity!

Coordinator Grades 3 & 4

The International Baccalaureate conducts a wide range of workshops to help teachers and schools to better understand and deliver the IB programmes. OIS has hosted the IB Workshops for educators from Asia-Pacific from April 16th – 18th.

In our workshop ‘The Role of Language’, Ms. Leanne Sunarya brought to light the fact that the IBO Mission Statement without doubt connects with the role of language in the PYP. Language is an important element of international education.

In a team of 22 participants from 5 different countries we began reflecting upon a number of things namely - Who we are as community of learners? What are our issues / concerns as teachers? How best to teach language through inquiry? The value of mother tongue in any assigned task. And more.

For us as PYP teachers of language, it was time to engage in reflection of our own practices with a view to sharing ideas and strengths and with the aim to improve student learning.

Teaching and Learning in the PYP Day 1 Review

The IBAP workshop started today with great spirits. The participants had jitters in the beginning but how the day ended quickly was what everyone was talking about. To begin with our workshop leader Christopher Boreham started with an ice-breaker by giving a little introduction about him and brought the group to an ease. The discussion was basically on all the essential elements of PYP in teaching and learning. The group discussed using the strategy of Think-Pair and Share. The curriculum should be concept based rather than content based which is timeless and transferable. As teachers we always focus on inquiry on the net rather than the prime resource which are the books, encyclopaedias, ask an expert, e- mails, etc. So we all need frequent reminders to look for the information available to us at hand. This workshop was an insight to the teachers; you would rather be a guide on side than “a sage on the stage.

Looking forward to gain knowledge more tomorrow…
