A
class of I graders sits and waves to themselves on screen as the teacher tests
the web camera. The students know they’re about to make a video call using
Skype. This is the first time they have ever heard about Skype, so they are not
sure exactly what’s going to happen. For now, they are fascinated with just
seeing themselves on screen.
While
waiting for word on the other end, the teacher showed the picture of the person
who was connecting over Skype. The session was based on our ongoing unit “Communication”
and the caller will be speaking to them from her home. A message flashes at the
bottom of the screen indicating the caller is ready. Students go quiet as they
hear their teacher place the call.
When
a familiar face appears on screen, the students whisper, “I know him.” “she was
at our school during open house.” The caller is a parent of our class. The students
become still and silent. The students sit completely captivated
The
parent played dumb shards game with the kids wherein the kids came to know the
importance of non verbal communication. Then the kids asked many question
related to the unit as well about Skype.
The
session was really interactive and it gave a great exposure for our kids to
know about different tools used for communicating their ideas. We really thank
the parent from the bottom of our heart for taking out her precious time and sharing
her ideas with us over Skype.
