Student’s Reflection on CAS Activity at a Slum School near Chacha Nehru Park

On the 1st of February, 50 Grade 11 students from Oakridge International School, Newton Campus, wanted to make a change. They wanted to make a change for the betterment of the society — a difference that people would remember. In order to achieve this goal, the students set out to teach the children in a local slum area about health, hygiene, and the importance of education. The students took with them a huge bag of goodies for the students and a lot of hope for the future.

The first thing that many of the students felt when they saw the school where they were supposed to teach was: “How can anybody study in a school like this?” The headmaster gave us an insight that showed us that the future is not as bleak as the school’s walls. He told us that even though many of the students are from downtrodden families with very low levels of incomes, they still come to school regularly and make it a point to learn as much as they can.

After a prayer by the headmaster, the students of Oakridge then set out to do what they originally came for. They taught the students how to wash hands, brush teeth, what to eat and what not to eat, and what is good for the body and what is not. The local students listened intently, adding points if need be, and demonstrating what they knew. These instances show that no matter how deep the society may be in economic depression, there is still a ray of hope — in the growing generation of tomorrow.
