Erich Segal, an Yale classics professor turned popular writer whose first novel, “Love Story,” became a staggering commercial success though it didn’t get much critical acclaim. His other famous works include “The Class” – a saga based on the Harvard class of 1958 and won literary honour in France and Italy. “Doctors” was another New York Times best-seller.
The Love Story chronicled the fate of star-crossed lovers, the highborn Oliver Barrett IV and the working-class Jennifer, who meet at Harvard, fall in love and, over the strenuous objections of Oliver’s family, marry. The novel spent more than a year on the New York Times hardcover best-seller list.
The Love story is artfully sketched, without any extra trimmings or elaboration, and tells the story in a short and sweet way that immediately captures the reader’s attention.
Segal manages to expertly capture the magical moments in Oliver and Jenny’s lives that make their story so special, amazing and out of this world.
You almost feel as if you are experiencing the love, the despair and everything else that Oliver faces and overcomes.
It is filled with the lively banter and explosive love between Oliver and Jenny and makes it a book that is a must read for Senior High.
Oliver and Jenny’s love for each other increases despite the hardships they had to face to make in order to make a living. It clearly shows the levels of maturity one should attain before one gets involved in a serious relationship. This is a must read for those who want to know the difference between casual romance and pure love.
I fell in love with this book the first time I read it. It is one of those books which leave you blinking back tears at the raw emotions and feelings and most of all, the profound love that is spilling out of the pages of this work of art by Erich Segal.
