In relation to the current unit - grade 2 learners have learned about various food groups and balancing these food groups in their daily meals. Just when we told them that they will have “make your own snack session” learners enthusiastically involved themselves in coming up with their own snack menu. There were a plethora of ideas…everyone came up with their own healthy and easy to make snack. They quickly made their shopping list for each food group while we organised a field trip to Hypercity. This trip was immensely fruitful with uninhibited support from our parent volunteers.
As a follow up for the field trip learners had a“make your own snack” session within their own class rooms. It began with washing hands and getting ready to help teachers cut the fruits and veggies that they bought. The learners were all enthusiastic and very cooperative during the whole time. Once the snacks were ready the learners tabled the food and took turns to pick the food of their choice and made their own sandwich. They loved the fruit salad. It was very surprising to see that the food that they usually feel is BORING and NOT SO TASTY suddenly was the yummiest food they have every had. Some learners have tasted some foods for the very first time and they all loved it. Learners were all smiles with the pride of eating their own snack for a day.
With this our learning about healthy eating came a full circle.
This is what we proudly call “THE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING-A LEARNING FOR LIFE”
