A workshop on “Assessment ” was conducted by Perico Pineda from Philippines, on 25 Nov 2011 for select teachers at the school.
The objective of the workshop was to make the teachers experts on assessment in PYP
Tuning In
The program director, a seasoned professional at training, initiated the workshop by giving an overview of the objectives of what the program aims to achieve and the manner in which it is scheduled. He began by testing the prior knowledge of the participants on assessments in PYP, by way of questionnaires and pointed questions. This set the tone for what would follow during the remaining sessions.
Grouping Strategies
This session hovered around grouping of various strategies, which was done by dividing the participants into various groups. The participants brainstormed the situations given to them and, thereafter, presented to the participants and this was moderated by the program director. Thereafter, program director summed up whether the strategy suggested by the participants was appropriate or otherwise together with reasons
Strategies for Assessment
The final session was totally devoted to broadening our horizon on various strategies that needs to be adopted in PYP assessments. This led to attaining deep insights and innovative ways to assess in the PYP curriculum. The workshop also broadened the horizons of participants to handle tech savvy children, sensitivities involved in handling children with divergent backgrounds and multi-cultural environment.
All the teacher participants were actively involved in the activities that included the paper snowball throw, signal signs, six thinking hats and more. Videos were shown on the issues of standardized testing in schools and it's alternatives. Mr.Perico kept us occupied with lots of brain storming sessions that were extremely enlightening. Lots of group discussions on the various assessment tools and strategies had the teachers upgrade their knowledge immensely. A fabulous learning day of Assessment indeed !
Finally, the program director summed up the salient points/his point of view, aimed at broadening the horizons of the teachers and empowering them with new techniques/strategies to hone the skills of participants in assessment during PYP.
