Food Adulteration — Student’s Reflection on Guest Lecture

The Guest Lecture by Ms. Pooja Khaitan was phenomenal. It was really interesting and the knowledge I gained was great. She spoke about the causes and effects of food adulteration, which is related to our lines of inquiry.

A few of the effects of food adulteration are: High blood pressure; skin ailments; obesity; cancer and; sometimes, even death! A few causes of food adulteration are: The availability of too many products in the market, availability of adulterants, poor buying practices of consumers, consumer psyche, profit margins, etc. — this knowledge helped us to understand why adulteration takes place.

We also spoke about another significant topic ‘Consumer Rights’ — Right to Choose, Right to Information, Right to be Heard, Right to Redressal, and Right to Consumer Education. She also told us about the World Consumer Rights Day (March 15). She also conducted simple experiments to check if any food product was adulterated. It was fascinating.  We also spoke about the companies that authorized food brands.

We also had our second Formative Assessment. The task was to express our understanding on the causes and effects of food adulteration using the strategy circle of view point. In the first part of the circle, we wrote the causes and effects; in the second one, we wrote a brief summary and; in the third one, we wrote a question. In the end, we wrote the ‘wrap-up’ where we could elaborate or write a question.
