Student’s Reflection: Sahasra Gala Aradhana

I was part of the Special Assembly held in honor of one of the Trinity of Carnatic music — Sri Tyagaraja. Sri Tyagaraja composed thousands of devotional kritis (Carnatic compositions) mostly dedicated to Lord Rama, which are popular even today. All the vocal and instrumental music students wore traditional clothes as they performed on the stage. I was in the vocal group and some of my friends were playing the Violins, Keyboards and Tablas.

As we sang the Tyagaraja kriti “Sarasa Netra Para Guna” in Sankarabharanam Ragam, Adi Talam, we were enthusiastically joined by all the students in the audience. Since about a thousand of us sang together, the event was called “Sahasra Gala Aradhana” — the tribute of a thousand voices. As a student of Carnatic music, it was a privilege for me to participate in this event. I am thankful to the music teachers and Oakridge for giving me an opportunity to be a part of such a rare event.
