Guest Lecture by Jennie Maydew – An Amazing Animal Rights Activist and a Great girl

On 3rd December, 2013 someone from America who is an expert on animal rights came for the guest lecture. Our issue for the PYP exhibition is about “Rights” and one of the sub topics is “Animal Rights”. About 30, 5th grader students are working under the issue “Animal Rights” and they are working really hard towards their inquiry. I as their mentor thought it would be perfect for me to invite somebody who knows tons of information on the issue.

One of our staff, Ms Nivedita helped me get in touch with Jennie. Jennie is a student in America and works tremendously for Animal Rights and has come to India to do research on the same. She gladly accepted my invitation for guest lecture.

She brought amazing videos and pictures to enhance her presentation. Kids loved them and they got to know a lot about animal extinction due to human activities. They learned about palm oil cultivation being a threat to “orangutans” a monkey species, or forest cover being cut down due to other agricultural activities, rivers and ponds and lakes being polluted and thus aquatic animals dying due to water contamination. She went on further to show the kids, videos of how cows in India eat a lot plastics unknowingly. She said, “This was the first time in my life that I saw cows eating garbage. It happens only in India”.

There were many such case studies that she had done and she presented them to the students. They on the other hand took full advantage of the opportunity and asked her many questions and cleared their doubts. In this interactive session, a lot of help was put through towards their inquiry for the PYP exhibition. The event ended with card and gift giving to the guest by the students. Jennie in fact also gave her reflection about the session. (see below).
