Chemical Bonding: IBDP Guest Lectures in Chemistry — A Rendezvous with World-renowned Scientists

A Student Reflection

On January 7, 2014, Dr. Gernot Frenking, an eminent theoretical chemist from the University of Marburg, Germany, came to visit the IBDP segment to deliver an informative lecture on “Chemical Bonding.” Dr. Frenking has published many award-winning books and has bagged numerous laurels, including the prestigious Schrödinger Medal of World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists in 2009.

During the session, Dr. Frenking expounded on various topics related to bonding such as hybridisation, orbital overlap, and wave functions. It was a topic in which all of us were intrigued about, as we were learning about this in class as well. After his lecture, there was an interactive Q&A discussion where the students asked Professor Frenking about his notable achievements and queries associated with the lecture. All in all, it was an enriching and unforgettable experience and we can hardly wait for more enlightening sessions in the future.
