Reflections on Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory

On 7th January 2014, all the IGCSE teachers assembled for a Professional Development session on the topic “Maslow’s Need Hierarchy Theory”. It was conducted by Ms. Siby, Ms. Sanjeevani and Mr. Venu. The theory is based on the lower and higher level human needs. The session started off with an activity where the participating teachers had to write down their wants and needs on a piece of paper. All of them listed different needs and wants, discussion was done and later the theory was introduced.

A short film “UP and the Hierarchy of Needs” was shown. It was a very interesting film. Finally, the need hierarchy theory was also explained with reference to Theory X and Theory Y.” The five needs include: Physiological; Safety and security; Social; Self-esteem and; Self-actualization. Every teacher was advised to encourage students to achieve the higher-level needs. The session concluded with the statement “Nobody can do everything, but we can nearly all do more than we think we can.”

It was really a wonderful session with lots of our school and class examples. It engaged us for 1 hour and relevant to us. It was really fun to discuss each and everyone's needs and wants with a nice activity. We also discussed social and professional needs of people. I really appreciate the Team's effort to conduct this session.
