AIRTEL – MANCHESTER UNITED FOOTBALL COMPETITION

Telecom giant Airtel has tied up with famous European football club Manchester united to provide children in India an opportunity to train under Manchester united coaches and players. This is a part of the Manchester United Soccer school program. 

On 18th September, the preliminary round of selections took place at Red Hills football ground. Over 700 schools students from schools like HPS ramanthpur, Ivy league and so on participated. Local coaches were present and they chose around 80 players for round two of selections.
From OIS 7 students took part. They were Anurag, Vaibhav, Manoj, Ananth, Sridhar of grade 12 and Varun and Sachin of grades 10th & 9th respectively. All seven of them made it through to the next round.

The 2nd round of selections took place on 24th September at the Railways Sports ground. On this occasion, the participants were coached and tested by 3 Coaches from Manchester United. They put the 80 students through drills of controlling, dribbling and passing the ball. They short listed 20 students who were made to play a special football match. They then chose the final 4 students who would go to Manchester United based on each individual’s scores. From OIS Anurag Jain and Sachin Bharati were selected to go Manchester, UK.

These selections were held in 5 cities – Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chennai. All over India, totally 20 students have been chosen. These 20 students leave for their camp to Manchester United on 14th November. The camp will last for a week. They will return on 20th November. The whole trip including air fare, accommodation is sponsored by Bharthi Airtel. For most of these children playing with International stars like Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes is a dream made possible by Airtel and Manchester United.
