Eating disorders

At 9:00 am  today , the students of class 9th, section A, B, C and  D gathered in the dining hall for a special talk on eating disorders by two prestigious doctors  Dr R.S Santhosh and Dr. Nandakishore.
Dr. R.S Santhosh is an endocrinologist, a doctor who studies glands. He spoke about problems usually faced by children. He started out by telling us the difference between abnormally short and normally short. Then came one of the most important diseases, Thyroid. Thyroid can be easily treated but should be treated fast. Hypothyroid is very serious. Easily treated but can cause damage to almost every single part of the body. ‘At the age of 12-15, having a big thyroid gland is not much of a concern,’ the doctor informed us ‘90%, its normal.’
Rickets was next. This was a disease caused due to lack of vitamin d in the body (not found in food, if you’re wondering). The knees in this case either touch each other or spread away from each other. Vitamin D is mostly found in sunlight but these days, who actually goes out in the sun?
Diabetes, a major disease. There are two types, Type One and Type Two. Diabetes affects everything in life. The lifestyle might never become normal if not treated properly. Type one is when there is lack of insulin in the body, when there is high blood sugar. Obesity is type two, a major problem with kids these days.

Early or late puberty is also a problem.

This concluded with the first talk. We were introduced to Dr. Nandakishore. He mostly spoke about all the surgeries that can help you reduce weight.
‘Behavior, Environment and Genetic problem can cause obesity.’ He said.
A few major surgeries are Bariatric surgery, Pharmacotherapy, Restrictive surgery, VBG, Gastric balloons, Gastric band, Gastric sleeve and Gastric bypass.
The last few make you less hungry, either inserting a balloon in your stomach, or tying a band over the stomach and causing you less hunger.

More or less, it was a very informative presentation with funny videos and colorful pictures, topped off with two well learned doctors who explained the whole thing in an easy and understandable manner.
All in all it was a nice presentation.
