In connection to the on-going unit of inquiry, students
connected their learning to the festival of diyas and expressed their feelings
towards the way festival has been celebrated for last few years. They have
reflected using De Bono’s 6 thinking hats on their understanding.
White
hat:
Transformation of energy in crackers happens in different
forms. The crackers have chemical energy which transforms into light, heat,
sound and mechanical energy when burst. Heat and sound energy from the crackers
are harmful to all the living things in the environment.
Black
hat:
This festival has both the aspects of advantages and
disadvantages. This festival is a good festival to enjoy but not to harm
people, flora and fauna. When we launch rocket they might go into other houses
and something dangerous can happen. They even might kill birds when flying.
People who make crackers are children who are either orphans or belong to a
very poor family. They survive and support their families by working in these factories
where making crackers even risks their lives. This is nothing but child labour.
Red hat:
We feel bad for the people who are involved in making
crackers. We should try and take action. While we enjoy and have fun during the
festival we should also think about these underprivileged students.
Green
hat:
We are responsible to conserve energy. We can be empathetic
towards our fellow beings during this festival eve. We are trying to send
messages as “Please celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali because the sound, heat of
the crackers might be harmful to the flora and fauna. Please use only diyas,
sparklers and others that do not cause much pollution.”
