Students
of IBDP Grade 12 had the opportunity to visit the Upper Primary School at
Gowlidodi run by Move the Wheel Foundation .They interacted with the children
at the school by teaching them basic concepts in Mathematics and English, and
also engaging them in games and sports. What caught the eye was the level of
interest that the children at the school showed to learning. And this was
complemented by the interesting ways the Oakridgers developed in order to
effectively share their knowledge. This included songs, and group discussion
and games. At the same time the school playground became a reflection of
cheerfulness and bond between the children and the Oakridge students. The
Oakridge students themselves have had a lot to learn from this experience.
Patience as well as organisational and team-work skills had to be put to use.
As one of the Oakridge students herself says of the experience – “This visit
has enabled me to understand the perspective of people from another walk of
life.” True, interacting with children who come from economically or socially
disadvantaged families does enable one to count his or her blessings.
Overall,
this experience was something that we will cherish as a great way to appreciate
the value of education for all and that we are lifelong learners after all.
