8th graders conducted an activity to enable students to graph
a line given the slope - intercept on a giant coordinate plane, moving on the
plane to plot the points. Students drew the X and Y- axis on the floor of the
class using chalk and marked the points on the axes. They were divided into
groups of four. I gave them in a linear equation on the board. One of the
students would go to the board and determine the points satisfying the
equation. The others would form the line on the giant graph by plotting those
points. When they were not in a line, the students figured out that they were
doing something wrong and readjust the plotting. Student understood the concept
of gradient/slope much better as they could see the formation of the line. They
could clearly see the line getting steeper, translating up or down. It was so
much fun to see them work together, get moving and get immediate feedback from
each other.
This activity was based on a video in tech (Teaching Channel)
