CAS Activity Reflections of Grade 8, Sections D & E

On 7th November 2013, my friends and I went to Joy Land School at Hydershakote for CAS. We splitted into various groups and each group got busy with their class. I was in Aarushi’s group whom we had appointed as our group leader on the basis of her good leadership; we were planning to teach English and Science.  It was about 2 hours 30 minute program.

We were given 8th grade for the first hour and then 7th grade for the second. Teaching 8th was easy because we all belonged to the same age group so it was like teaching our friends. We had planned to teach communication skills to them. Through this we had learnt to understand people, how to get involved with them and building confidence. For my next visit, I would like to plan even better to make it more beneficial.

We the students of 8D and E had gone to Joy Land School, Hydershakote on the 7th of November, 2013. I had paired up with Ameya, Viksit, Viraj and Akshar of 8D. We taught Math to the students in 7th and 8th grades. In the first hour, we taught algebraic expressions and exponents and, in the 2nd hour, we taught statistics to grade 8. We had planned to teach Algebraic Expressions to 7th grade, but after we went there we had to teach by grade levels.

We were a bit tense when we taught grade 8th as we had not prepared for it. But on the whole we managed everything pretty well and ran the activity in a smooth and easy way. If we have another visit, I would like to teach some other subject, like English, science, or social. But just in case we have the permission to play cricket, then I will be the first to utilize the chance given.

Today the 7th of November 2013, we the students of 8D went for CAS to Joy Land School, Hydershakote. We spent about 2 hours 30 minutes with them. My group consisted of 4 people: Khushi, Aishwarya, Paridhi, and I. We taught 9th grade. We decided to teach them English speaking skills and develop their confidence with educational activities like elocution, debate and reading. We also gave them a few tips on how to stand when they are speaking in front of a huge audience. When we first entered the class, there was only one girl. We asked her how many people were there in the class---she said 5 people. We were very disappointed since we only had 5 people to teach. Soon the rest of the 4 people came.

We first had an introductory session in which they told us their hobbies etc. Then, we had elocution on the topic of what they wanted to become. They did not like the elocution, so we started a debate. The topic for the first debate was Internet: the Death of Newspaper. We first performed a mock debate for them to understand the concept and then we became the audience and they started the debate. We were helping them whenever they faced a problem, it was very interesting.

Then we started to read their English textbook--each of them read a few paragraphs. Khushi and I found out the mistakes they were doing and corrected them. For example, a girl named Shravani pronounced vest as west. At the end we tried playing hangman but the time was up and we had to leave. Overall it helped them in public speaking and removed the fear of facing the crowd. This was a fun-filled and a friendly CAS trip.
