Parent Talk for Grade IX

Mrs. Joanne Chung Vedati - Marketing Consultant , an MBA Graduate from STANFORD University, obliged us by accepting the invitation of coming to the school and interacting with students of Grade IX CBSE.
The parent talk was on the topic,”How to apply and get an admission in a US University”.
She has given a complete picture of various admission procedures in US Colleges through colorful PPT.  She has given the details for the eligibility Tests like PSAT, SAT, TOEFL and their conditions.
The US universities consider the high school academics, Standardized test scores and the character of the student, even the high school grades are also taken into account for the admission i.e. from the classes 9th to 12th.  The high scores of the students do matter for the top grade courses in admission.
Qualification for PSAT – The student has to take the test immediately after 11th Standard and the tests will be on critical reading, Math, writing skills (Quantitative reasoning).

Qualification for SAT: To assess the critical reasoning skills which are required for the successful completion of the college (the student has to take the test after the completion of 11th or early12th)
Qualification for TOEFL – To access the English skills which are used in the academic class room. (11th Std or before 12th)
Another major assessment is done on the students Character which will be analyzed on the basis of the outdoor activities  i.e. clubs, art, performing arts, sports, community service.
Admission officers want to know about the student who has done something interesting which will set him or her apart from other applicants (communication is key, essays and interviews.
The frequently asked questions for the U.S University applications are:
  • Write a fable about your life (1000 words)?
  • If you could have the dinner with the famous person (dead or living) whom it will be and why?
  • What is the highest level of education your parents have achieved and what schools did they attend?
  • What would you describe as your single greatest accomplishment in life and why?(1400 words or less)

The session was interactive as the students reacted positively.  The interaction created a close and cordial bond between the parent and the students. It was a great opportunity for us as Mrs. Joanne Chung Vedati took the initiative to come and talk to the students about the topic which has a great importance in choosing a career. She created a conducive atmosphere which helped in free flow of thoughts.
