It was time for yet another Chairman’s Trophy
for the 5th graders, a time to hone the skills of speech and body
language for the kids. They were given the topic related to the Unit III – ‘Government’
in our Program of Inquiry which was ‘Democracy is the best form of Government’.
Our students had already learnt a lot about
different types of common governments of the world and thus, this chairman’s
trophy also acted as a brushing up of what they already know. Well, off course
the idea was to see the overall communication skills of our little friends.
We were all excited for the event to start and
it did at 2:10 pm on 4th November, 2013. On the occasion we had Ms.
Rohini and Ms. Radhika (parents of the Grade 6 students) who took their
precious time to grace the event as the judges.
The event started and one after another nervous
and excited participants came up to stage and gave amazing performances.
Really, I sometimes think if these kids are in grade 5 when I see the amount of
knowledge and talent and also confidence that they possess. The judges were
diligently marking each group and finally it was time for the deliberation of
the results. The room was filled with tension as people started biting their nails
and saying prayers at the same time. Children who were there as audience, were
anxious to know who had won.
Finally, there was the silence and the three
winners were announced. Everybody did well but the 5J, 5D and 5G were extremely
good. They knew exactly what they were doing. Children from the winning class
burst into hooting and clapping. Surprisingly, the rest of the losing teams
also took it very positively. I saw pleasantries and kind gestures shared
between the winners and other teams. I asked some of the participants of their
reflection on the event and they said things like that they learnt winning is not everything, instead giving
one’s best is. I mean, are these children really growing up so fast? Another
pat on us, teacher’s back, for that. Overall, a healthy competition and
delightful late afternoon.
