Guest Lecture on “Functions of the Government” for 5th Graders

We are currently dealing with the unit “Government” in 5th grade and our kids learnt a lot on the topic. However, it is always better to receive information from an expert. That was when we the teachers of grade 5 decided to bring in a guest who could give a lecture or rather an interactive session on the topic “functions of the government” which happens to be one of the lines of inquiry in the unit.

So, on 5th of November, 2013 we had our dear fellow teacher Mr Prabin Rai from the senior school, who has a social background and who perfectly fit the role for a guest lecture. He was kind enough to take some time out and give some insights to our kids on the various functions of the government.

The lecture began by 9 am in the morning right after the assembly. Prabin sir started the lecture by asking some questions to the students first and then picked up from one of the answers given by them. It was a very healthy interactive session where the students got to know about the two main types of functions of the government i.e. the coercive and the developmental functions.

There was discussion about the sub levels under each broad type. There were lots of questions that were asked by students and our guest patiently answered all of them. Many of them also cleared their doubts they had from their earlier classes on the topic. The entire session was video–graphed so that it can be used for further references too. Over all it was a fantastic lecture of which our students made lots of learning.
