Well here’s the thing! We are going to show you how to plan a snack
and a healthy one mind you, within a given budget. At first you decide what
healthy snack you would prefer and what are the ingredients you’d need in it.
Then you list them down and decide for how many people you are cooking. This is the babble you’d hear the kids of
grade 2 say if you’d ask them how you would begin planning the preparation of a
snack.
We at Oakridge, Newton Campus, believe in
assessing the kids in innovative and creative ways. This was one example of how
we try to cater to the subject assessment of a child with a twist of fun.
It was a great experience for all the kids of grade 2 who
were make-believe junior Oak chefs for a day. The kids had a wonderful time
choosing the best ingredients for their meal wherein few kids came up with mind-blowing
ideas for their meal. The classroom ambience was created, soft music tickled
the ears. It was a restaurant all right!
Several enthusiastic parents
volunteered to lend a helping hand which was much needed we’d say keeping in
mind the little bundles of energy who kept zooming around. The children were assessed
on hygiene, selection of food groups in their snack, etiquettes and knowledge
of food pyramid. Wait! Did I just say etiquettes? Well yes, etiquettes of
preparing and serving a meal were also an expected factor. After all don’t we
profess and practice all-round development? Yes sir we do!
It concluded with tons of appreciation
from the parents, teachers & students who couldn’t get enough of their
snacks. Have a look for yourself.
Here are some reflections by our students:
I was really excited. I felt so nice because I had done the shopping
for it. It smelt so nice and looked yummy. I don’t like vegetable salad but
today I tried it and liked it too. – Ayesha
We included food from different food groups. It was so much fun because
I did it all by myself. All the snacks were delicious and healthy. – Daksh
It was a pleasure to see how to make things without the gas stove. We
made so many things. It was awesome to make food without cooking. We designed a
healthy breakfast and covered all food groups. – Araddhya
I enjoyed this experience a lot. It was very informative and I learnt
to design a healthy snack within a given budget. Now I can go shopping on my
own too. I also got the opportunity to try making a snack that has all food groups.
What an experience! – Nityashree
