writing competition, Eshika Agarwal.
A “Green Diwali’ is not just about avoiding crackers and cutting down
on sweets. It’s about making life more meaningful and delightful by adding a traditional
stroke with a social responsibility.
Diwali, essentially the ‘festival of lights,’ is celebrated to mark
the triumph of good over evil. This
festival, opt for the traditional diyas
and scented candles instead of electric lighting which just consumes
electricity. Lighted diyas, not only
bring out the true spirit of Diwali, but also make our homes prettier.
Instead of bursting the traditional chemical crackers, all of us can
alternatively use organic crackers made of recycled paper with a decibel level
lower than that prescribed by the pollution board.
Rather than sending cards to everyone, this season let’s be tech-savvy
and tweet greetings or text messages to wish our friends and relatives. Let’s
go organic this year and try making home-made sweets instead of the commercial
ones with artificially added flavour.
Diwali is not just about bursting fireworks, but it is also a good
time to give back to the society. Let us donate clothes, books, unused items to
orphanages or spend time with the elderly.
Instead of using paint and decorating our home, for the Diwali
parties, why don’t we use reused paint and traditional wall hangings made out
of paper or jute cloth? Also we can opt for banana plates and earthen glasses
to serve food to our guests this season.
Now why should we wait for the New Year to make our resolutions? Let’s
pledge that in our pursuit of happiness, we will not harm the environment. So
let’s go green this Diwali!
