World Math Day at Oakridge

The Counseling and Supportive Instruction unit celebrated World Math Day and World Dyscalculia Day on 5th. The event started with the Math Ambassadors welcoming all and spreading awareness about Math day celebration and giving away the bookmarks with easy to use math tips. The Math day assembly was conducted by students of Grade VJ where the children provided information about the importance of math day and dyscalculia day.
The unit organized inter-house quiz competition ‘Math-e- Magic’ for grades 4, 5 and 6. The rationale behind the quiz was to make the children explore the different areas where math can be applied. The quiz masters were Ms. Sharon, Ms. Sangita Karan and Ms. Nandini Mathur for grade 4, 5 and 6 respectively.

To light up the ambiance with little humor, there was Mr. Pi with his riddles. When all the participants were busy in solving the problems, Mr. Pi would present his riddles to the audience such as ‘What did one math book say to the other? Don’t bother me I’ve got my own problems!’ Why were six afraid of seven? Because 7 8 (ate) 9’.
The quiz was coordinated by Ms. Sandhya- remedial instructor for math and it was divided into three rounds: Fun with Math, Creative Math and Innovative Math.

Fun with math involved mental math techniques to solve the problems. Whereas creative math round required logical reasoning, looking at patterns and sequence.
Innovative math consisted of multiple ways of approaching the problem just like the saying “it is better to solve one problem five ways, than to solve five problems in the same way”.
All the participants presented their ideas systematically and enthusiastically.

The C.V Raman house won the quiz from grade 4 and 5. For grade 6 it was Amartya Sen who bagged the first place. Our school psychologist- Dr. Shakila Naidu gave away the certificates to the winners from grade 4 and 6 whereas our dear headmistress- Ms. Hema Sanjay presented the certificates to grade 5 winners.
