FUN WITH LEARNING

Grade IV students had an interesting topic to study. The unit was named Adaptations. Children were very enthusiastic to learn about different habitats, plants, animals and how they adjust to their location.
Students learned about different terms like hibernation, aestivation, migration, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, saprophyte, etc. They also brought different pictures of animals and plants and matched it with their habitats. The class monitor even conducted a quiz on adaptations when the teacher had to go out for some work.
One of the students made a beautiful poster of different plant adaptations. She stuck a leaf of aloe Vera on the poster. Two of the students created PowerPoint presentations on the same topic.  A boy made a poem on adaptations and wrote it in his book.
When the children were asked to bring their pets to school, one girl in the class researched on the turtle, gold fish and rabbit that were brought to the class and presented her paper.
Children were grouped and were asked to write about what they studied. They came up with interesting titles like Pitcher Works (Pitcher Plant Adaptation), Wolf Gang (Wolf’s adaptation), and Happy Feet (Penguin’s Adaptation) and wrote about their habitat, food habits, interesting facts and their adaptations.
A skit was also conducted in the class. It was about different animals talking to each other about their adaptations. For example, in one group there was a role play between the cactus and the camel. The camel wanted to eat the cactus but the cactus told that it has spines. The camel replied that it has a leathery tongue and that it would not be a problem for it to eat the cactus.

There were other role plays like

  • The deer and the tiger
  • The panda and the penguin
  • The chameleon and the penguin
  • The pitcher plant and the Venus fly trap
  • The kangaroo and the tortoise
Children enjoyed the role play the most. Overall, it was a good experience for them because they learned by having fun.
