Our internship from 12th-15th
October was full of unique experiences. We gained knowledge about a large scale
manufacturing unit and its departments. We chose Sri Nav Durga Textiles Pvt. Ltd
as we knew that it would give us the right exposure of working in a large scale
manufacturing unit. Management in a large scale industry is a very complex
process at different levels but this internship helped us to simplify this
learning and understanding the complex process more clearly. It was very
interesting and fascinating to see a simple grey fabric turn into beautiful
printed Sarees.
DAY
1:
The moment we stepped into Sri Nav Durga Textiles Pvt. Ltd, our learning
process began and we knew it was going to be a very meaningful one. To begin
with, we were first introduced to the MD, Mr. Chandrakant Agrawal and then the
heads of every department (designing, manufacturing, sales and finance). We
were asked to observe the process of making of a saree for the first day. This
would give us general information and outline of the firm. We made a note of
the whole process from designing to the stage of final packing.
At the end of
the day, we were asked to explain what we learnt and were given a chance to
clear our doubts. The first day itself was very informative and we knew that we
would gain a lot out of this internship.
DAY
2:
Now that we were thorough with the whole process, we were assigned the
designing, manufacturing, selling and financing part of a saree. We were excited
to take up this challenge and seized the opportunity. We started off with analyzing
the old designs and researching about the preferred designs and colors of the
customers.
We began our project on designing with the help of the supportive
designing head. Our design was very fresh and new which was appreciated by the
designers but we were asked to make some changes for convenient printing. At
the end of day 2, our final design was printed and ready for manufacturing. We
ended the day, elated that we had achieved our target.
DAY
3:
We worked in the most interesting unit of the firm. This is where designs we made
were converted into beautiful sarees. This process starts with the counting and
classifying the grey fabric which is sent from Surat. This fabric is then sent
for dyeing and bleaching which is also known as the Scouring Process. Next the dyed and bleached cloth is sent for a
check of its PH level and strengthening. After the fabric is strong enough, it
is sent for conversion into rolls for the convenience of printing.
For printing
the desired design onto the fabric, it is first carved on a wooden tray and
then this tray is put into the printing machine and then this wooden block
imprints the design on the saree. This printed saree is sent for looping where the
colours are enhanced and strengthened so that a rigorous wash doesn’t let the
color fade off. The last step is to heat the cloth at 80 degrees and to check
the PH level again. At the end, our saree was just a few steps away from sale.
DAY
4:
Once we saw our beautiful saree ready, we were eager to send them to the
wholesalers. The saree was first cut into 5.5 m each, folded and put into
bundles of 20 each with blouse pieces. Meanwhile we analyzed and calculated the
cost of production and adding the profit margin. As a result, we now knew how
much profit the factory was going to make on that particular design. Later the
sarees were put into plastic covers and were sent to the market.
The day ended on a very
bittersweet note as we were leaving Sri Nav Durga Textiles Pvt.Ltd and were
going to miss this internship a lot. But on the other hand, we were taking back
a lot of knowledge and experience with us. This helped us understand the way a
functional structure of a firm works. After this internship, we could now
relate our experience to our business studies concepts.
We thank Mr. Chandrakant
Agrawal, MD Sri Nav Durga Textiles and his team for giving us the opportunity
to intern with him. We would also like to thank our school Oakridge
International and our teachers for supporting us throughout.
