On October 12, Yamini and I set off
to MapMyGenome (a personal genetics sequencing company) for
our internship. We were both really excited about it and we could almost
hear our hearts pounding as we reached the front doors. We were
welcomed by the director who was expecting us. She put a
senior intern in charge of giving us tasks and set off.
The senior intern started off by teaching
us the basics of genetics and some aspects of biology. We had already
learned some of these topics at school but a few topics were entirely
new to us. Armed with this new knowledge, we were given a topic for
research. The topic was the effects of genetics on diseases. We started off by doing some research on
brain disorders and the effect of genetics on them.
Then we
moved on to cancer studies. By the end of the day, we had created a small
presentation, which we were rather proud of. We left for home with big smiles
on our faces. The next day, we did some more research and presented a draft to
our senior intern. She approved heartily of our work but told us there was room
for improvement. We spent the rest of the day editing our presentation.
On the third and final day, Yamini could not come,
as she was sick, so I spent the day editing our presentation and devouring
cheese sandwiches. At the end of the day, I presented our presentation to our
senior intern who loved it. All in all, the internship was a great learning
experience and I would love to go for another one.
