Student Reflections: Debate on “UK Residents vs. Immigrants” by 7th Graders, CIE

Tanvi. L. R, 7 J, CIE: We had a debate in the class after learning the topic “Effects of Migration”. Our geography ma’am shared her personal experience of the reason for her migrating to Maldives and Africa for a few years. We got to learn why people migrate to different countries and why they finally settle back in India.

The debate for the topic was we had to talk on behalf of UK Residents on one side and Immigrants on the other side. I and two of my friends were the UK Residents while three other classmates of mine were the Immigrants. It felt like a real debate with both groups fighting for what they wanted. Both the groups came out with amazing ideas to pose to the opposing group.

The UK Residents spoke on Immigrants taking their jobs, using their health and social services, etc. while the Immigrants spoke about how they would take the jobs that UK Residents didn’t want to do, for a lower salary and long working hours. It was an extremely thought-provoking debate. I am looking forward to the next class debate!

Aakanksha & Varsha, 7 J, CIE: On 13th December, 2013 we had a debate in the geography class. My group represented the UK Residents, while three other boys represented the Immigrants. During the debate, we concentrated on the various aspects and the pros and cons that were related to the topic.

Some points discussed were: UK Residents argued that Immigrants cause problems in cities, won’t adjust to the nation’s way of living, use our health & social services and take away our jobs. On the other hand, Immigrants argued that they were skilled that UK needs them — many of them were doctors & nurses which UK is in need of and they are willing to work for long hours for a meagre pay.

It was a very enriching experience and we learnt a lot. We are looking forward to another debate soon.
