Vote for my Future Drive Begins at Oakridge International School Newton Campus

Voting is one of the important tools which can be used by the citizens of India to identify, learn and act on the issues that affect their lives and leverage their power in the political process.
Morning of 7 December 2013 dawned at Oakridge International School Newton Campus with the drive to encourage citizens of India to vote. Grade 11 students under the supervision of Ms Rachna promoted this by enlightening the parents, teachers and the admin staff on the importance of voting in the democratic system.
As voting is the key to society’s progress, a PLEDGE to vote and a PLEDGE to make a voter ID were signed by them. They were given car stickers which would act as a constant reminder to them.
This activity has helped the students become active and informed citizens who in turn will be a support to the community. Soon we are planning to have a crew to help out the citizens of India with online registrations to make their voter IDs so that when the election commences, the citizens will be ready to vote.
In the campus, we could see groups of students around the posters on display discussing the measures to be adopted to encourage the people to get their voter IDs and they were happy to encourage voter turnout.
We are hopeful our message will go across effectively to all the citizens of India especially in view of the upcoming elections. We want people to realize their vote holds the power to change their destiny. It is time to wake up, take responsibility and vote for a better future.

Reflections of Students:
Harsha Chitturi of grade 11 IB said “Today was the beginning of a revolution. Vote for my future enables the students of today take a stand to become the leaders of tomorrow.  Today was one major increment in the direction of sparking a wave of political awareness and societal responsibility. For us Oakridgers, today was a proud moment when we got to stand for what we believe. Today we showed the world that we non-voters are able to transcend the limitations of adult franchise and make a lasting mark on our government and political system, taking our future as citizens of a great nation into our own hands. As Margaret Mead once said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful commented citizens can change the world; Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Neeharika, a 10th grader, who has to take this up as a FA 4 Assignment said “Having projects with a defined purpose helps me feel more passionate about the assignment — it gives my work more meaning when there is a theme tied to it, especially when I am enthusiastic about inspiring people to vote.”
Another student, Chandralekha of grade 11 CBSE said that the project pushed her to further her knowledge of political science.
