Beaming, enthusiastic students, and an equally
determined group of IBDP 11 students all set to take up the role of teachers –
This is what stood out in the first session of this year’s Spoorthi program,
held on the 10th of August. The very meaning of the term ‘Spoorthi’
– Energy, enthusiasm – seemed to reflect in the form of the interactive study
sessions. Student volunteers were assigned various classes and subjects and of
course, they were more than happy to contribute as members of the Spoorthi
family. The Spoorthi students were taught concepts of Math, Science and
English, and their participation was enthralling. Driven by the purpose to
teach and more importantly, learn, the student volunteers taught with great
dedication and helped each student understand the lessons well, through
one-on-one discussions and useful worksheets.
After the end of the session, while a few of
them could confidently identify parts of a sentence, others could very well
understand real numbers. Some of them also showed keen interest in
participating in the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, and so our student
volunteers wholeheartedly trained them for a dance performance. One of the
student volunteers, Ridhi says, “I think I was a bit nervous to actually teach
the kids a proper song, and overwhelmed in the beginning but once they started,
I actually had a lot of fun as they were pretty much as excited as we were and
it was amazing.” Rhea, another student volunteer, described session as an
“enriching experience, as we
learnt a lot about both the kids and ourselves.” the session.
Undoubtedly, all the volunteers would agree.
Spoorthi is one of the many initiatives led by
Oakridge International School that aims to provide students the opportunity to
understand their own strengths and weaknesses and enables them to be more
creative. Interacting with the Spoorthi students gives them a better
perspective of the world and the joy that is exchanged in the process is
enormous.
