CAS Activity of Grade VIII

On 29th of august we went to Joyland School to teach the students there. My group was teaching the first grade about health and hygiene. We wanted to help those kids live a clean life. We tried to do this by teaching them a lot Important things about health and how to keep their surroundings clean. We also gave them a word search to complete. It was important that we were teaching the young because they are the future so we must teach them the correct principles. It was both an enjoyable and frightening experience to teach those kids. It was quite chaotic but we got passed this stage with the children and taught them many important things. I think that the students enjoyed the experience especially the word search. I learned a lot from this experience. I learned how effective communication can be and I , learned that I must improve my communication. I hope that the children learned a lot about being healthy. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and I hope to go back “JOYLAND SCHOO” and teach again - Kushal Dulla (grade 8G)

Today we went to Joy Land School for CAS. My group was teaching English, but there were three classes so we split up into three pairs. My partner Divita and I were teaching 2nd graders. It was a really challenging experience, in my opinion. The 2nd graders were not as cooperating as I had hoped and most of our time there was spent making them be quiet. I think that was the main problem I faced there, because they would not stop talking! I suppose that it was expected, since they're much younger than us, but it took a lot of time and energy to keep the class quiet. Another problem I faced was the language barrier. The class had a mixture of kids who knew Telugu and Hindi, and since my Hindi is not that good, it was tough to communicate with them. This time, we attempted to teach them some vocabulary but they just wanted to draw. If there's one thing I want to do next time, it's to prepare beforehand. I think I should prepare a list of words, with their Telugu and Hindi translations so it's easier to communicate. They may not want to learn, but I believe that they will appreciate it later when they grow up. One thing I liked about going there was getting to meet them. Towards the end, we just allowed them to draw and I was trying to talk to everybody and get to know them. It was pretty fun and I think that maybe next time, we could teach them conversation skills, because that would be more useful than grammar, especially at their age.It was a challenging experience but I really enjoyed going there and can't wait to visit again - Shreya Jayaraman (grade 8G)

Today we visited Joy Land School. We arrived at the school at around 9 in the morning; we noticed that this school was much more developed compared to the one we visited last year. Walking in, the first thing we noticed was a small black Pomeranian barking at the sight of visitors. We were given a choice to teach English to either 2nd, 5th or 9th graders. We chose to teach the 5th graders because we felt like they were a suitable age group for us. We began the class by learning all the students names, what languages they would understand (Hindi and Telugu) and what their interests are (Drawing) We learnt that they weren't familiar with the rules of grammar, so we started to teach them about nouns and then moved on to pronounce. They were quick learners. To make the class lively, we decided to split them into three teams of five and play a game on what they learnt. After watching their levels of participation and enthusiasm towards the class, we realized what CAS was really about. It was about sharing our knowledge and that it wasn't just teaching us about them, we learnt so much from them along the way. Being in the teacher's place was overwhelming and frankly, was quite stressful, but all in all we enjoyed the experience a lot. The next time we visit Joy Land School, we will be more efficient at teaching. We look forward to visiting the school again  - Avani and Meghana (grade 8G)

Today 29-08-2013 we went to JOYLAND SCHOOL to share the good. We split into various groups to teach them Art and Academics like Dance, English and Math etc. and I picked up Dance. They were very good but quite hard to manage/control, as they were screaming while I was teaching them a dance step. They were quick and easily learnt the dance steps, they can develop all the skills but they lack exposure. So I made them aware of dance, how it can benefit them physically and mentally, like will make them flexible, relieving stress etc. I had fun and I think even they also and the next time when I will go, I will try to teach them from where we ended today. Now I will plan what exactly they grade 3 and 4 pupils want to and I will be ready with Telugu songs, as they all requested for dance on Telugu song. So next time I go to JOYLAND SCHOOL with Telugu and Folk songs. This time the CAS was fun and I am hoping that when I go to JOYLAND SCHOOL it would be much, much and much fun and learning - Satya 8G
