Saturday, August 3rd was a
bright day and to brighten the faces of the children at the Government school
at Manikonda, a group of 11th graders guided by Kshema, Heer and
Amogh visited the school. There we divided ourselves into 9 groups – 7 teaching
groups and 2 activity groups. We reached the school at around 10:30, and we assembled
into our groups and met the kids. The children were very welcoming and excited
to see us. I took part in the dance team which consisted of Avinash, Sahiti,
and me; we interacted with almost all the grades. We conducted our dance
classes on the terrace of the school building.
Our first batch was the fifth graders,
who were very eager to learn all types of dances. The dance which they enjoyed
the most was the Macarena. In fact, we held a mini competition to decide who
the best dancer in their grade was. They also danced to a song which they had
previously prepared – a song for Robo. The next couple batches seemed to enjoy
Telugu songs more and made up their own dance for some of the songs. In fact,
they made the students’ assigned to their grade dance with them!
The children went to eat lunch around
1:00, so we took our leave from the school too. Most of the kids came to see us
off and a couple of us got friendship bands for the kids. Overall, for me
teaching the kids was a great experience and I loved every second of it. I met
a lot of different types of kids who had different type of talents and
personalities. It was a great opportunity and a very fruitful day spent with
the little ones - Ridhi Reddy (grade IB
11)
